They probably did make a borla catback at some point then.

I am hoping. I just don't know how a slightly uncorked V6 will sound. V8's are nice but V6's seem to be a bit nasty sounding. A slight burble at idle would be cool but I don't want it at the expense of the rest of the RPM range.

I stand corrected. I just did some looking around and Borla did in deed make a cat back system for these cars. The photos I can find look very similar to what I saw in the junk yard.

This looks exactly like what I saw in the car in the yard. Down to the clamps and everything.

If the photo is accurate the name should be on the top. I am going to have to take another look at this as It may be a pick and pull score just to re sell.

The problem I have is that they also make these.

So it could be a cheap muffler with these on them. In short it could be a poser. However I did not see the clamp where the tip met the muffler. It was all nicely tig welded. Lots of little dimes stacked in rows type welding. Very high quality tig welding.

Well updating this again.

Mid pipe with the flex pipe has been replaced.

Replaced the ball joints

Decided to get one new shaved tire to match from Tire rack.

Solved leak in other frount tire. Valve stem was leaking so it was replaced,

Re connected the E brake cables and tested everything seems fine.

The car is ready to go. I hope to get to the registry next week.

Re the Borla system in the junk yard. I went back and looked much closer and they are indeed real Borla mufflers. I will be getting them. $75 for the set!!!!! The yard will be putting the car up on the rack for me so I can get them out.

I also rean some tests on the car to see if I could determan the bit of white smoke on start up. The short of it is it is fuel injector related not HG related so I am going to do the 100K mile service (it is due)and while I am in there replace the injectors.

Other than that it looks like I should be driving / enjoying this car soon. All said and done I will be in to it for less than 3K to get it up and running and road worthy. After a do the 100K maintenance and a couple other minor things like belts and hoses and brake pads I should all in for under $3500

Ohya I was looking in the glove box and I found all the dealer service records from new. the 100K was already done.

Another bit of weirdness.

The former owner of the car turns out to be the mother of a guy that use to work at the station I help out at on the weekends. She actually came down to see the car. She wanted to sit in it again (she is probably some where north of 70 years old) and she really loved that car. I was not there for this. I found out that the dealer told her it was going to cost $12-14K to fix it so she donated it to charity. I was told that she is happy that it is being restored but at the same time she really misses it. My friend that owns the station told me that they were asking what I had into the car and overheard them discussing making on offer on it. So I may have an offer on it before I actually get to drive it. I am torn as to what to do but I told my friend that owns the station that 7K would be a number I would have to think long and hard about. It is a car that has a complete service history and is in great overall shape. Finding another is actually not hard. Finding one as nice as this would be tough.

That would indeed be a tough decision. I'd keep it for awhile and then consider after you put a few thousand miles on.

You know when I first saw $12-14K It screamed scam to take advantage of an old lady, but then I thought about it. I bet the just looked up the price of a brand new trans and transfer case plus R&R and quoted that.

this is the reason the average age of cars on the road is only about 10 years. After that most people don't have the knowledge or ability to look after them and it becomes cost prohibitive.

P.S. Nice old lady or not. I'd keep the car for yourself. How does it perform with the 3.0L or haven't you had a chance to really drive it hard yet? What is the shift quality like on the auto box?

In reply to Adrian_Thompson:

Small correction- the average car age on the road right now is just over 11 years. Which is pretty high.

That being said- your theory of that drivng new car sale (as a implied theory) is correct- US new car sales look to be above 16.5M this year.

edit- 11.4 in 2014, predicted to continue to raise. Higest it's been since tracking, and 3 years older than it was 20 years ago.

I have driven it and it drives VERY nice!!! Shifts perfectly. Nice and smooth but still has that crisp new car trans feeling if you kow what I mean. There are absolutely no noises from the driveline.

The 3.0 really moves the car down the road. It is not rocket ship but it will get up and go when asked. Plenty of power and torque for what the car is. Where it really shines is the 30-70 run. Merging in to traffic is absolutely effortless. The AWD system is interesting. The car just kind of plants its self and goes. No drama to squat of a RWD no lift like a FWD. No nothing it just goes. Because of this you get to speed much faster than expected. Ohya and this is a car that feels like you are doing 30-40 mph no matter what speed you are going.

I really do like this car. The overall feel of quality is very good. Not supper high end Euro but definitely a good solid feel with nice interior appointments that don't feel like cheap plastic.

I'd be careful changing out all the fluid at once. I've talked to more than one auto trans guy who says if a trans is neglected but working to leave it alone or change out small amounts of fluid at a time. Supposedly if you change out all the fluid in a trans that's never had a trans service it can dislodge all sorts of gunk that will stop the trans from working in a few thousand miles.

Please keep updating this. I love this rags to riches story.

I hear you re the trans. I am going to see about a service and what my local trans shop sais. I want to look at the trans fluid and I need to see if the dealer did the sever duty service schedule or the "lifetime" service schedule on it. I suspect the lifetime as the transfer case was empty but that was the result of the rear seal failing and all the fluid leaking out. So I will have to investigate further.

Kind of my feeling but move on to what? I mean this car ticks all the box's for my current DD commuter. I wonder if they made an AWD S type. I like those as well and they have a bit less ford to them and are just a bit bigger.

Sorry, I forgot, you posted a thread wanting AWD, nice but not too nice and no Subies.

In that case, the offer would have to enough that you could get a nicer one. Otherwise in your situation, I guess I would say no thanks. This one seems to hit your buttons. It just seems to me that this is a bit of an orphan with ??? reliability.

Well it is a ford and the only real problem is the transfer case and that seems to be a maintenance issue. With the post 03 cars the output seal leaks and it runs dry (what happened to my car). The answer seems to be use good quality synthetic gear oil and make sure it stays full and change the output seals every 40-50K (with the service). The other issue is that the trans and the rest of the driveline fluids are supposed to be lifetime under "normal" service. However the sever duty service schedule is to change them every 40K miles. Those that do the severer duty service schedule are reporting no problems. Funny how that works. The 03 and older had a viscous transfer case that did not take well to being hammered on off the line. Kind of like the difs in NA 944's. Roll on the power and even they seem to not be much of an issue. And again go to synthetic Gear oil. The rest of it is just a gussied up ford contour. So even if something does brake parts are cheep and readily available.

Thats what happened to my acr. Loved the car. Met all my needs and most my wants. Loved that car. But I couldn't turn diwn a cash money meeting of my berk you price.

Just make sure you set that price high enough.

I once had a local guy tell me the story of selling his mint(automatic) NA Miata. A middle-aged couple followed him home one evening because the wife absolutely loved the car. He shot them a price of $7k(IIRC, it's been ~8-years ago) and they agreed. His line was "If two fools meet in the night, don't be one fool walking away."

Don't know I only got them because they are $600 new and to the pick and pull they are just used mufflers. I am going to list them on the jag board.

I don't want to ruin the nice factory burble it has and the last thing I want is to hear the exhaust with the windows closed or worse a droneing at cruse.
