I sold my wife's 92 Volvo 745Turbo last night.
I am buying a 81 X1/9 as my daily driver (she will take over my super wagon)
Hopefully the FIAT doesn't become a FIAM (Fix It Again M4ff3w)

Hot starts own me.
I think it is combination of weak aftermarket fuel pump and the injector cooling fan not working.
there is a reason for the fan...
try www.fiatparts.com Bruce will hook you up quick with something inexpensive and shipped that day.
Brave choice my man. If you need help getting your old mid-engine sports car to run, let me know. I have an exorcist that specializes in small, 4-cylinder demons common to the X-19 and MR2.
The fan mysteriously started working today.
I made it to and from work with a stop on the way back with no issues.
Well, not starting issues. The drivers side rear wheel fell off and went flying down the road while the brake shield made sparks behind me.
Seems the PO had that wheel off at one point and didn't torque the lugs enough.
No damage done though.

I do really like this car.

I hate to say this.. but been there, done that
Hot start issues completely resolved themselves when the injector cooling fan started working.
Got new brakes on, but drivers rear caliper seems to drag.
Needs some bushings up front, get some knocking with suspension movement.
Fun car.
boy, that brings back memories. My high school driver's ed department was a bit underfunded. I graduated in 92. We always kept two DE cars, one automatic and one manual. For years, our automatic car was an 81 Monte Carlo V6. It rarely ran, and when it did it left clouds of black smoke everywhere. The manual car was an 81 X1/9. It was yellow (done by the shop class in a most peculiar key lime yellow color) and had bald Kelley tires on it. Takes me back to the days when I go propositioned by the DE teacher in that car.... its a shame he was a guy.

Note to self. Always check lug nuts on all recently purchased used cars before driving down the freeway.

Definitely. I had the rear wheel fall off a Fiat 124 parts car when I towed it home from Charlotte to Baltimore. Fun experience: http://home.comcast.net/~cvetters3/fiat_story.htm
First full tank averaged a hair under 27mpg. Up about 10mpg from my wagon in town average.
That is with lots of time bouncing high up in the RPM range. I'm not very good at driving "nice"
Surprisingly the Fiat has been more reliable than our 91 745t during this period (the crank position sensor died and took a few days to figure out)
