I think it's time for an MX6 V6 or Probe GT.
Purely for the noise they make.
Oh, and they happen to be halfway lightweight, have good power, and look cool.

I would like to see a Maxima SE (the early 90s one). Or a J-body I have never seen a good build of one.
There are a lot of really good suggestions here but did you buy an E36 or E46 yet? You probably will.
Mercedes Benz 190D 5 speed. Make it a grease car. Heck put a turbo on it. I had a 190e 2.3 16v and it was a great driving car.

You know, I'm almost regretting passing up on my parents' E46. By the way, I'm not saying that this will be a project car. I just want a neat daily driver with good a/c.

eee thirdeee
Im starting to get pretty excited about this 4th gen Maxima project car you GRM peeps should be shopping for right now..
The consensus is pretty strong!
here is a link to the for sale section on the maxima.org forums. Should be some Southeast region cars in there. Also usually a good selection of un-modded or lightly modded maximas as well as the usualy built/boosted cars

Here's one in Tampa area....just tell him you're a maxima.org member for $500 off http://forums.maxima.org/maximas-sale-wanted/614258-1997-nissan-maxima-5spd-black.html
note the following part of his for sale thread:
For sale is my 1997 Nissan Maxima. It has the VQ30DE engine that makes 190hp and 205 lb/ft of torque and it is mated to a smooth shifting 5-speed manual transmission. The car is black with black and gray cloth interior. Everything works as it should, and there are no weird problems or noises. It is a GXE model, but comes with some bells and whistles including power windows, power locks, cruise control and a Kenwood c/d player. The car has ice cold air-conditioning, and is a pleasure to drive. The car does have 177k miles, but do some research and you will find that these cars run forever as long as they are properly maintained (which this one has been). Recently I have repaired the A/C, replaced the Knock Sensor, replaced the Right Rear Oxygen Sensor, and replaced the Radiator Hoses. There are good tires all the way around and it drives GREAT! This is a reliable, fun, fast, and family oriented car (hard to find for under $4k)!
Depending on offer, I may include a full set of Z32 Twin Turbo wheels/tires.
I listed it for $3,500 OBO on other sites, but the .ORG price is $3,000.
Another vots for the SVT Focus.
One big plus, is due to its underated nature, you can get a nice one, or actually find one (compared to some suggestions) for the asking price

A cop who was interested (in a good way) in our autocross last weekend freely admitted that his cruiser would suck on our course. He said he'd love to try it, but would want a smaller more maneuverable car for it.
As for the Cavalier suggestion, GRM should use one to build a Redneck Rollercoaster.
Bah! My P71 has won Regionals in STU and beat raw times of Miata's. There's something to be said for a car that can do 95MPH in 2nd gear!
Whatever happened with this? I have always wanted to see GRM do a 4th gen Maxima project (or any Maxima for that matter, it's just that the 4th gen is the best). I just got my new GRM mag yesterday and it sounds like David is looking for a new track car now...how about a DD Maxima that can also do track duty? Sounds like an easy decision to me!
Didn't he buy a Mazda 2?
I also want to see a Maxima in here. I'd also love to see an Infinity G35 type deal.
TDI Jetts might be interesting...older 4th gen cars are getting cheap.
I like the idea of Maxima and SVT Focus.
Just read the column and came back to this..
Just do the maxima already. Seriously, we have huge consensus in this 5pg thread, more so even than in most threads where miatas and BMWs are mentioned.
People want to see it, and it checks the personal boxes you mentioned both last year and this year. 2 birds with one cheap, reasonably quick, reader-approved stone!
I read the column as well and immediately thought K-swapped CRX. The only problems cited with the previous B16 CRX project car were the high rpms at highway speeds and lack of A/C. Seems a K-series swap (w/ A/C) would resolve both of these issues.
Plus GRM contributor Andy Hollis recently built one for the 'One Lap' and could offer up some expertise...
BTW - you can never have enough CRX content in GRM!
