Just stirring the pot here....

Was thinking of a way to add value and involvement to the challenge for spectators, participants and organizers.

It is pretty clear that there are people who, while not having a vehicle to enter, would like to attend and participate as a team member.

What I would like to propose is a Pit Slave auction:

Attendees without a team can bring a resume and put their name in the pool. Resume could include tools brought along, areas of expertize and how many cases of beer they have at their disposal. Teams that need crew can bid with the money going to a charity.

In order to drive this and add value to the organizers as a charity contribution, I would also like to make the amount paid deductible from the budget up to some max amount, say $200. ( I do realize this is a slippery slope, but in my mind still within the spirit of the event)

Sounds like a good idea...I think even LeMons would give it a different name though!

I don't like "Pit" either. It sounds negative.

We will need some logistical support. We are planning to fly the boys down from Harrisburg late Thursday. Not sure which Airport makes the most sense. We will need help getting them picked up.

Care to elaborate on the budget bit? I actually thought about you specifically when I capped it at $200 since I have an idea of what you can do with that vast sum of money. But since I was using this as a charity venue, I figured it would open the door to more "Paddock Minion" (that better?) buyers.

I like the idea (because I like creative non-profit funding stuff), but I honestly doubt I would participate.

I am usually pretty tapped out on funds by the time I get to the Challenge, and running on adrenelaine, from my cheapskate solutions which keep me up 24/7 for the 3 or 4 weeks leading up to it.

It is hard for me to imagine spending money I don't have to get help with something I've been trying not to spend money on.

Plus, there is always plenty of free help.

Plus, I'd rather compete with an unfinished car and focus my priorities on visiting with friends and helping them with their cars. It's not important enough to me to finish that "last little thing" to pay for it and skip the part that is most important- friends.

Plus, I'm cheap.

But A+++ for the idea- very creative thinking!!

John brought his own Pit Slaves last year.

1 could sing. 1 was cute.

Don't give him any ideas!

I like the idea, however, I never knew there was a need for this sort of thing judging by how many people jump in and help anyway. The first year we brought the XJ-R and decided that 11PM was a great time to engineer and install a turbo setup in the parking lot, there was a constant flow of people I've never met or seen since helping fetch parts, hold lights, and wrench. I saw a similar thing happen last year with the Fiero parking lot build.

The abundance of people looking for a cause is just what put this in my mind. This would not only raise a bit of charity cash, but it would give people a better sense of being "owned" by a team.

As to not wanting to spend more money, I am going to guess that the average Minion is going to go in the case of beer range unless they show up with an impressive resume and or reputation. That is what led me to the budget balance that would encourage higher bids.

There was a lot of discussion about what and how much $100 could get ya last year.
