Let's say I just bought a brand new truck that is very nice looking excepting for it has a giant, loudly chromed grill and I'd like it to be either smoked chrome or a different color all-together but it's a $300 part I'd prefer not to permanently ruin. Will plasti-dip stick to plastic chrome in a way that bug impacts wont make shiny pock marks thru it? Does anyone make a plasti-dip-like semi-opaque so I could do a light smoke effect to tone it down a little?

They definitely have a Smoke flavor. I think it will stick to chrome, but I'm sure that has been answered on their forum. Or just call them, pretty helpful on the phone.
Dipyourcar.com (I think) has a demo video in which they use clear plastidip on a Mercedes GLK, chrome and all. It's a nice effect.
Whatever you do you're going to have to re-do it every three years or so. Wear and tear and UV all take their toll. The reason I haven't done a grill is that I'm horrified by the prospect of peeling everything off a grill in the future.
I wanted the loudly chromed grill on my new truck. But if i didnt i would mask off the honeycomb parts in the middle that are already black on pretty much any vehicle already before spraying anything. That way peeling isn't a B down the road
Most of the honeycomb bits can snap out if you pull the grill off the truck. On a lot of trucks I think it would actually be easier to pull the grill than mask.
Plastidip would be hell to pull off a honeycomb. I say regular rattle can flat black. Then redo it over time.

+1 for this...plasti-dip will go on but it would be hell to maintain or fix.

I put the black Plasti-Dip on the grille a year ago. Still looks as good as when I put it on. Even after running down some gravel road with friends that ended up with rock chips in the paint around the grille.
Just make sure you look at the videos on Dipyourcar.com and follow the directions. From what I hear from other who have done it, it is easy to touch up.
