Hello All – My dad is reducing the size of his fleet, and thinking about replacing his current tow pig. The current much loved ‘Burban has issues he just doesn’t feel like dealing with, and a newer/nicer truck would be both tow vehicle and daily driver. He hasnt made a final decision, but I was thinking this crowd might be able to help with guestimates about sale price. Thanks for any thoughts!!
2001 Suburban 2500 LT , Vortec 8100, 4wd with 201k Miles. Black on Grey interior. Has tow package, and an aftermarket differential cover, as well as heavy duty hitch and trailer brake controller. Zero rust Florida truck used to tow a 24ft enclosed trailer to/from track, and otherwise it mostly sits. Recent maintenance work includes brakes (calipers/rotors/pads/hoses about 18 months ago), and water pump + hoses 12 months ago. Michelin 10ply tires in with a lot of life left.
We have owned it since 2010, and the last 10 years/40k miles have been very reliable It has 4 real issues:
-The front seats and interior are worn -No bad interior smells or anything, just rough from use. While there is no rust, the paint has seen better days
-A/C isn’t cooling very well
-Front window regulators need to be replaced.
-PS pump may need to be replaced.
I think it'd be a conflict of interest for me to give you a value as I want to be first in line to buy it. Seriously I really am interested.
I didn't mean for no one else not to give a value!
I'm also interested in what price you come up with, I might try to persuade SWMBO to let me buy it. I regret selling my 02 2500 Burb with the 8.1.
This was mine
Probably gotta post pics to get a better assessment
Lol. "Thought you folks could help me figure out a price"
GRM - "I wanna buys it now"
One data point for you- last year we just bought a total cream puff of a '99 Suburban 2500 for a family hauler. It's a 350 Vortec, not a big block, though we found in our searches that didn't really affect real world ask prices all that much. The interior was clean, no rips or tears, some minor stains in the rear cargo area. 160k miles, no real mechanical issues (just some slightly deferred maintenance), brand new tires, zero rust, and very good paint with small chips but no clearcoat peeling.
For all this big ole goodness the seller took $5800.
My rough guestimate, for a big block vehicle about the same age, 50k more miles, worn interior, A/C needing work, minor other mechanical issues, and iffy paint, would be $3-4000. Depends how fast you want to sell it, and how quickly you find someone who really wants an 8100.
Thanks everyone, for the input and interest. I've asked dad to send me some pics I can post, but at the moment he's getting some outdoor stuff cleaned up at the house as Isaias is on the way.
Around here, that sort of truck goes for around $3500-4000 on the private market. On a used lot, they would ask $5500 and take $4500.
Go ahead and tell me it's black so I can go on about my business.

It's black on grey interior. You should point out how that lowers the value a bunch.

Totally undesirable combination. I knew a guy with one that was black over gray. It only had 69k miles and it couldn't sell for $3000.

LOL thanks but I think you oversold on the acting.
My serious reply, is that while black trucks seem to be popular, I don't understand the appeal here in FL. Isn't it hot enough here? Why would you want to have a vehicle even more inclined to turn into an oven?

And look filthy with even a spot of dirt?
We bought a tan suburban. Haven't washed it in a year. It's still tan.

Lol oops

It doesn't lower the value to me. I just won't buy it. Lots of people love black cars.

Well hell. For that cheap I can paint a vehicle.
Hi Everybody - A slight "no-update update." Dad has been taking care of other stuff around the house, and being indecisive about moving-on from the Burban. Will keep you guys "in response order" once he decides to sell. Thanks!
8.1 burbs hold their value, I see many go for up to 10k with that kind of mileage/year, especially a southern truck with no rust.

Last vehicle I bought I waited 2 years before they would sell it to me. I'm a patient man.
