very true about the Hot Hatch market.. if not for the GTI.. would we have had the BMW 318ti (granted. there WAS a 2002 Touring)., the Civic and Integra Type S and R, or even Mazda 323X?

well.. it's funny. If you read the history of the GTI.. VW didn't design it. . VW didn't even want to build it, the GTI was a private project done by some of their engineers that just happened to capture the imagination of the right people at the right time and demand forced VW to build what would be one of their best and most profitable products

I've owned both, and I'd take a 510 over the GTI, condition being equal.
I'm a watercooled VW guy, and I'm voting 510. Wish I could find one..
