Some of the Mallock cars get close - basically Lotus Seven's where the engine gets offset and shoved rearward. That said, for anything other than the track, it seems it would be kind of lonely...

If I was going to do something like this, rather than angle the engine, I'd put the engine in straight and use a live axle with an extremely off-center pumpkin.

EvanR I had been thinking along those lines for a D/E-Mod car, Spidertrax makes a cut-it-to-your-length fabricated Ford 9" housing that, while insanely overbuilt for anything a road car would do, is still less than the weight of a factory 9" when all is said and done and all the necessary bits are welded to it. it ships wide enough to realistically leave one side uncut and lop all the necessary width reduction off of the other side, and I'm pretty sure they'll custom cut the axleshafts for you once you provide them with the measurement. only real snag is that the spidertrax housing ends are set up for off-road, and only come in 11" or 13" rotors and set up for a 6 lug wheel, but I'm sure a bit of creativity and borrowing from the hot rod world would have you set up for 5 lug wheels pretty easily/quickly

Why not just use a Samurai or Wagoneer axle with the differential already offset to the passenger's side?

There have been a couple Lemons cars - or at least one - that had a motorcycle engine mounted alongside the driver. The Angry Hamsters Z600 is the first one that comes to mind:

Flipping the axle over for the pinion to face forwards results in the gears running on the wrong side and quick wear I think but not 100% sure.

For sure the vent will leak though.

I believe ford has a reverse 8.8". Randys ring and pinion list one that way.

All great posts, I think kevlarcorolla's comment about keeping the mass centralized both fore/aft and side to side has me locking in on what to plan for. To answer the question on what this thing is for, first let me say I think challenge cars make sensible test mules for ideas that otherwise might take more coin and time to make civil on the street than I have heart to jump into. I'm looking for a possible challenge car where I could execute this concept within a reasonable budget knowing it doesn't "have to" be made street legal. In the end, if the mule is a success giving a notch on my belt (insert Tijuana/Donkey show joke here), I have a 1st gen Scion Xb approaching the 200K mark. Its a salvage title and an auto, I expect the auto to be the first thing to die and it to appear disposable to the Mrs. At 2400 lbs, I think it has sleeper potential even if it is tall (65"). I guess the height explains why I was including COE questions.

One way or another, I hope someone who is searching this topic stumbles across all the great input. Thanks

Possibly using it on the street means the bike engine concept moves down the list (plus that scion is too heavy)and car based drivetrains move up the list. I don't recall the previa engine being a great engine from a performance standpoint.

Audi v8 and transaxle would be a great choice as the engine would be right behind you I expect.You'd get decent power leaving it stock and could be a total street sleeper/big fun on track.

I expect that having a passenger seat would be a major plus to convincing the wife of the projects merit as well.

Since a scion has a bit of space inside would it be possible to a Subaru engine/transaxle behind the seat, put a sprocket on the rear output and use a chain to run a driveshaft mounted over the engine back up to the front wheels?

Take a truck motor with the transmission and transfer case, turn it all around and use only the 'front' output of the transfer case to drive the rear wheels. Now you have the output shaft off to one side of the motor.

Or if a transfer cases has an off set rear output, use one of those, but I don't know enough to know if there is such a thing.
