Been done. It's called "vintage racing."

Laguna seca and Daytona are on the rotations. With 600-750 cars at these events, it takes a pretty large place to support the run-offs.

That is very true. Last month Daytona's infield swallowed up a number of cars, trucks and transporters that would have choked most facilities.

It's more than just an oval you know. Plus, it's much more centrally located and easier to access via major arteries.

F1 ran there for several yrs … the road course was built FOR F1 to come back to the US

the decision was made a couple of yrs ago to move the runoffs around each yr … so it was never an option to stay at M-O
Boy......tough crowd
Yes, the SCCA has it's faults, but keep in mind that they have kept sports car racing alive in the U.S. since the 50s. Yes, other options have sprung up, but the SCCA is still the largest sanctioning body supporting the sport we love. I tend to cut them a little slack. They are run by true enthusiasts, who want to see car enthusiasm grow and prosper.
Yes, it's easy to bag on the SCCA, but without their hard work over the years, where would amateur racing be?
For those "out of the loop", they announced a few years ago that the Runoffs would be changing venues yearly. They wanted equal access for members all around the country. This is why it has moved from Road America (just 3 years ago), to Laguna Seca (last year), Daytona (this year) and now Mid Ohio (next year) and then IMS. (in 2017)
It seems they are trying to make their members happy by moving their championships to extremely desirable venues. I can't hate them for that.

And it was redesigned last year. It is almost a completely different course now

this …
what is too bad, is it's still, for all intents and purposes, still being run at various levels by the "that's not how we've always done things" crowd

That's something I point out to people. The SCCA isn't a "they". It's a "we". It's an "I". If you're a member, you're part of the SCCA and the SCCA is partially you.
Don't like something? Say something. Don't like the way things are done? Say something, volunteer, be constructive!

How much of that is because that crowd is the only people who step up to do things?

^^^ This. I tend to at least try and show up for the various meetings at my local region and volunteer when I can. It's basically the same group of about 20-ish people who do that. Just making stuff work at the local level is a lot of effort and there aren't always enough "other" people willing and able to step up and contribute.

it's too bad that they had to pave it with a magical type of pavement that only ate up one brand of tire and caused blowouts that were totally not the fault of the teams running chassis setups that were way too aggressive to make up for a tire that wasn't as good as what the other brands brought, otherwise F1 might still be there..
anyways, back to the topic at hand...
