I've been on the hunt for a V8, 4x4 1st gen. Tundra with reasonably low miles and a good service history for quite a while. This weekend I happen to find one, but the guy wanted $15k. 102k miles, 2 owner, timing belt/water pump serviced, new shocks, upgraded stereo, etc. all done by Toyota. The current owner works at a Toyota dealer. Please tell me I made a good decision to walk away...
$15k for a 15-ish year old 1/2 ton pickup that's not unusually good in power, payload capacity, etc. is definitely too much regardless of condition. You could easily find a more capable truck in good shape for 1/2 the price, just without the Toyota badge.
Sounds a touch high, but my personal opinion is that everyone gets too wrapped up in a "hey I got a better deal than you" mentality.
If it's what you want, and it's in good shape, go for it.

Let's see... Looking local to me (rust country, so prices for clean trucks are a bit higher than some other areas), we find a few options.
If we stay around the $15k target, we can get a good bit newer and more comfy with at least as much capability and a few less miles:

If we want a lower price, we can find a truck that's still newer than the Tundra, similar mileage, at least as capable:

Going up in mileage drops the price off a cliff, it seems:

Plus, the V8 trucks will probably get better gas mileage.

That's a great truck, but almost crack pipe pricing. I had a similar 2WD Tundra years ago. The only vehicle I sold that I miss and regret. Got rid of it when gas was $5 a gallon and couldn't justify 14 mpg for a DD.
Long term ownership of Ford's and Chevy's don't even come close, so apples and oranges if you're going to compare and cross shop.
The plan/goal is to be able to build up a truck for moderate off roading/camping adventures with the Mrs. and at the same time be a part time DD. The appeal of the Tundra is size, it fits between the full size and mid-size truck, has greater capacity than a Tacoma/Frontier/Colorado, good aftermarket support and reasonably comfortable and reliable. My brain says $15k is crack pipe pricing, but my impulse screams "BUY THE STUPID THING!!!!"

If you want that, find an early 2000s Dakota in good shape. It's very close to the early Tundra in size and capability but much cheaper (which means more money to spend on upgrades and making sure it's bulletproof for traveling). And you can get it with a V8 and manual trans if desired.
I understand why you want a Tundra - I liked mine a lot. But I think I sold my rust free Colorado truck for half that asking price 7 years ago with 130k on the odometer, and Toyota trucks get extra love in this area code.
If it's what you want and you are ok with spending that much, you do you. Some parties will still question the logic of your decision and the concerns will probably be valid, but in the end, it's your call. Personally I'm in the buy a GM truck for less money group.
