The thread on costs of Chump and LeMons racing got me thinking. One of the big headaches encountered with crapbox enduro is putting together a reliable team in both finances and dedication. What if there were races say 3-4 hours total that you didnt need 4 drivers for? Just a single driver, or possibly only two? While it would be more expensive, it would still be the cheapest racing. Has this been done and I dont realize it? It seems it would be easier to buy a completed car from the chump boards and find a couple of pit crew helpers than put together an entire team. The internet is full of tales about teams falling apart. Thoughts?
Part of the LeMons thing is there is a minimum of four and max of six drivers required on a team. So no I don't see any way to do a solo effort.

I think he's proposing a new series with 3-4 hour races to eliminate the 4 driver requirement.
And BTW, there's a way around everything, there was at least one solo effort by a driver in Lemons. Speedycop of course, that guy makes me look sane.
Maybe its just me, or maybe its conditioning, but I'm cooked after about 2 hours of 9.5/10ths driving. I don't think I'd want to do more than that at one stretch at my experience level.
What about a low-buck sprint series, with 30 minute heats of smaller fields?
There are pony (4cyl) classes at circle tracks. What if there were something similar on a road course?

And maybe top 5 of the available heats race the next day for another 2hrs, with a mandatory pit stop, to find a winner?
We've created a local SCCA class for crapcans. That lets them do the sprint races and the shorter (3 hour) "enduros". Of course it also means that you need an SCCA license to enter. But that might be an option for you.
IMO, part of the radness of the crapcan series' though is in the multi-man / long race format. The reason I put enduro in quotes above is that IMO, a 3 hour race is not an enduro. For an endurance race to qualify, IMO, you need to be able to have a major failure, overcome adversity to fix it, and still have racing time left after the epic repair. In a 3 hour race, if you break, you might as well park it.

How successful is that class? It just seems like there is a void that could be filled by something like that.
Of course I also think there is a void in the Ben and Jerrys line up that can be filled with a creamed corn flavored ice cream with chocolate covered salmon eggs and pieces of sweet vidalias, I would call it Eggsactly Creamed. So what do I know?
Class debuted at the ARRC with 2 cars entered.

Spridget/spitfire in vintage might be another way to go. For $4-5k you can get a car with a log book - probably in need of fuel/harness/tire updates. Decent seat time - up here there's some longer races where you can get in a couple of hours at a time. For that matter - mk 1 rabbits, miatas, e30s are coming up vintage eligible for some groups. Entry fees are around 300 for a weekend.

What if you worked with a trackday provider to add a time based crapcan challenge with similar rules?
www.speedventures.com is a standup group out here in southerncalifornia and already runs groups for FF Hondas, S2000, Miata, BMW, Caddillac etc
hit up Speedycop and just pay for a couple hours in one of his jalopies at an event. He forwards all "donations" to charity.
