Are these things rare or have I been asleep at the wheel for some time? This car passed me in the FRS as if he expected me to take up the Gauntlet (happens with that car) and while I don't play that game, the car did catch my attention. I like it even if the one I saw was a bit on the Uncle Ben'
s side.
It's the same thing as a Lexus SC300/SC400.
They were a common JDM import in Canada but I think they've pretty much been cycled through that kind of "owner." If it's an LHD it's probably a ricer putting badges from the JDM model on his Craigslist special.
The door hinges are cool as hell. They open the massively long doors slightly forwards as they open out so you have more room to get out of the car in tight parking spots.
Quite rare and most variants were JDM-only. A lot of Toyotas And Lexuses got rebranded as a "Soarer." One was even an AE92 coupe with a 7MGTE in it!
The nice thing about some of the Soarers is that you could get them with the Supra twin turbo engine.
They were popular in Canada when the first JDM importing boom arrived. Mostly popular with folks who couldn't afford a Skyline. Neat cars but they seemed to mostly attract a demographic that didn't keep them up well.
There was also an '80s version that looked like a more aggressive version of a Cressida coupe. I want one, but want the money it would cost more.

Ughhhh..... those things and the 2nd-to-last-gen Mazda Cosmo are some of my favorite cars.

That was the first vehicle to utilize the Toyota 1JZ-engine, IIRC. Had a goofy "aero cabin" power targa (???) option too, as seen here. Totally awesome cars, on my "JDM import list" if I ever get there...

This car is for sale locally, his other sc400 (whatever) is wicked cool also.

But with a fartcan on the back.
The hinges on those are really neat. I've seen one in town here about 7-8 years ago that had the rhd front clip on it, pretty well built car too. Nothing too showy, no idea where it is now though.

While I think that the Japanese stylic trend of that era is the fugliest thing that ever fuglied (except for B12 Sentras, those looked boss), I admire that you find them awesome.

1st gen Lexus SC here in the states.... the only thing rare is finding a manual trans in one... the automatic was in 100% of the SC400, and more than 60% of the SC300
Odd you bring this up...
$5500 for rhd, 2 liter 6, .... http://club4ag.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=10807
Needs Moar 2JZGTE.
I think they (SC3/400) are cool. I would consider the 98-00 SC400, but I'm Lexus'ed up.
My friend imported and sold an older one. Pretty neat.
Correction: he imported 2.

I prefer the sc400 for the simple fact: 1uz.

I used to have an SC300 that I swapped a Soarer 1jz into. It was a really fun car, easy to drive, easy to work on, cheap, etc. I eventually sold it because it had a lot of miles on it, and I was getting back into autocross.
The aerocabin is one of the cars on my "car bucket list"
