Mine's a Miata (of course), GMT400, and a station wagon (04 Ralliart). Seems to fit one version of the profile.
We've got a Mazda 5 as an alternate entry, plus the Morris Minor challenge car to round out the fleet.
This doesn't have to be defined by what you own, I'm asking for your opinion.
Race: Miata (duh)
Daily: Manual brown diesel station wagon with a third row. Pick any model of the dozens for sale in the US.
Tow: Big, old, ugly pickup truck, preferably with a weird engine swap.
Tow/my daily: Newish F-150 with all the gizmos and comfort.
Family hauler/wife's daily: 3-row crossover or minivan. Our dear, departed Taurus X comes to mind.
Race/fun: Whatever is tickling my fancy at the moment. Currently Boxster, but has been 944, various Mustangs, M3, GTO, RX-7, etc.
But, gun to my head, I have to choose 3 specific models, it's F-150, Exploder, and Mustang. What can I say, I'm a Ford guy.
Gmt400 truck fir truck stuff.
Sporty car for motorsports fun (miata and brz most popular lately. Neon acceptable answer as well as sentra and others)
Hatch/wagon or luxobarge for daily. Id choose protege5 or high trim mazda6.
GRM holy trinity has to be Miata, P71 and some kind of wagon.
Three vehicles that fit the GRM philosophy for forum members? It's a trick question, three is just not enough, it's a laughable joke. I mean imagine asking your S.O. to pick just three pairs of shoes! Some things just don't compute (*)
I think the minimum needs to be:
- The daily, anything, whatever floats your boat for commuting to work that has a better than 50/50 chance of starting on any given day since there's a better than 50% chance every vehicle below this point is off the road at the same time.
- The tow pig
- The race car
- The Challenge car
- The off-roader
- The ice cream car (classic)
- The pin-up (four wheeled, not silicone implanted)
(*) Note, before being called out for sexism please note that in my family I am know for having more shoes than my wife and daughter combined, and I only have so few because she prevents me having even more.
The first holy trinity is just a start. You're going to need at least 2 trinities to be GRM.
Good golly what a thread to start. It's already locking up my brain. Is it only 3 cars or three cars you must have? Because first on my list was a truck to tow, but that's because I'd want to use it to tow home more projects which would quickly go beyond 3. Do I have to include a car for SWMBO or is it just 3 cars for me? If it's must have, but can have more, I think I'd be happy with:
- Some type of nice tow pig. GMT400 with an LS swap fits the bill nicely. I go back and forth on a single cab shortbed or a 2-door Tahoe
- A classic. If I had to choose one (and could drop a few pounds), I'd probably have another Bugeye Sprite. Although tomorrow I might choose an early Mini. Next week, it might be a restored Model A. Ack!
- DD: CTS-V Wagon with a manual.

My personal holy trinity?
Race: Diesel Mercedes, preferably W124 coupe with an OM606 and a BMW 5 speed
Daily: Jeep XJ, mine. 2dr, 4.0, 5speed, 4x4 (but if I buy a new Bronco, then that)
Tow: GMT800 ramp truck. 8.1 and ZF6, 2wd
GMT800
Korean Econobox for race car
Korean Econobox (but with an auto!) for wife's daily.
E350 passenger van, sedan of some kind and an econobox.
If I'm going to fit something close to the formula, here's my personal trinity-that's-currently-in-my-possession
- family hauler: Oddity
- daily/fun + family: WRX hatch
- race car: E36 328
If I could convince the wife to give up the minivan and I had more funds here's the fantasy
- tow-pig + fam hauler: V10 Excursion
- daily/fun + family: Evora S 2+2 (they're still small)
- race car: same E36, just better
99 Miata: for vintage back road enjoyment
NC2: the perfect tow vehicle
ND2 RF: rallycross fun
I thought we figured it this out 10 years ago?
- Miata
- Crown Vic
- Jeep Cherokee
Pitt Special S2S
Piper PA-18 Super Cub on tundra tires/floats
Gulfstream G-650
In reply to Appleseed :
Dude, really? You need to up the G650 to a G700. And as for the Cub, if you mention tundra tires and floats you want it for fun not vintage puttering around, you need to up your game to a Cubcrafters Carbon Cub. Damn cheapskate wannabe

Based on what I've read on these boards:
Miata or old-ass Boxster depending on your budget.
old ass land cruiser or Lexus suv or gmt400
Something broken, I mean "project car".
I always thought it was miata, E30, p71...
Did two of them, never had a p71.
Miata, Civic Si, 3 Series. :)
uhhhhhh
Ford GT
Ford Mustang
Mercury Cougar
wait are they supposed to fill different roles and be affordable? Crap, then uhhhhhhhhh
Mercury Cougar (race car)
Lincoln Town Car (daily)
Ford Bronco (tow)

If you said anything about the Pitts, I'd have to fight you.

Beechcraft model 17 is prettier.
In reply to Floating Doc (Forum Supporter) :
Jaguar XJS V12 vintage race car.
Ford F-150 pick up.
MGTD
My three would be a GMT800 in the form of a 2000 Suburban. It is hard to beat in the all around do anything vehicle. This particular one has 340k on it and still going strong.
2000 XJ Cherokee for those adventures farther off the beaten path.
2003 G35 for terrorizing the asphalt in comfort and style.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. At least until I change my mind.
My three would be
My Element as a practical bike/kid hauler. Would love something equivalent that is electric and a bit more towing capacity but that doesn't exist yet
My Civic as a toy
A ND Miata as a daily.
