I see it as taking the "Personal Luxury Cabriolet" into the 21st century. Something that feels luxurious, looks en vogue, and has a top that goes down, but now mates those traits to something with a tall seating position and AWD. Nothing really wrong with that.
They make THOSE but don't make a RWD, manual, five passenger car with a decent suspension?

You - and many people - may see nothing wrong with that, but to me, it's like taking grass-fed Kobe beef, lovingly seared to Pittsuburgh rare, and mating it with hot fudge and a cherry. They are both things that are fine in their respective contexts but make no sense whatsoever when mashed together.

So they made a Bronco/FullSizeBlazer/Scout but posh, expensive, and unreliable for the 21st century. I'd rock it if I could lose $100k and not care.

Not exactly. Enough people will buy an Evoque Cabriolet to make it worthwhile to produce.

Its a range rover give it time and they will.
Going out on a limb here. I really like it, upright seating, top goes down, flashy but not to much. Will sell a ton of them out here in California.
A convertible Rover? That is such a departure from their past....

That's the thing, it does. In a modern take on the older style of the Range Rover and due to modern safety requirements among many other things, those days are long gone.

I like it. I like it a lot.
For me, the problem with the Evoque is that it isn't good enough at everything to make me want it more. I'd rather a GLA45 AMG or Macan, because I want a do-it-all CUV with more on-road prowess. If I wanted off-road capability and a drop top I'd go this route.
Maybe in five years, used, at $20k.
A house here overlooking the #1 tee has a white one in the driveway. In white the Evoque looks cool in a Stormtrooper sort of way.
I think it has replaced a 4door Jeep Sahara edition. At $50k for the Evoque it is probably about the same price as a well equipped Jeep Sahara Edition. The Evoque is probably a much better convertible than the Jeep while still providing all the perceived 4wd-ed-ness that you would "need" for a vehicle for a vehicle that will never leave the pavement.
I see the Evoque also being cross shopped to the likes of a 3 series BMW convertible and in a northern climate, the Evoque is better year round to many consumers.
Like the Jeep Sahara, I would bet the Evoque is leased so the owner has no real concerns about long term reliability.
