This is for my Escort. 97k miles on the clock. I'm torn between Castrol Gtx 5-20 and Motorcraft Synth Blend 5-20. Which one do I go with?

Just use the Castrol. The stock Escort 1.9 is neither stressed out or a high revver. No reason to waste $.
i wouldn't waste money on a full synth on my 07 mazdaspeed3, much less for a 100k escort. FoMoCo synth blend has always done me well in all of my vehicles (f150, rsx-s, now ms3) and actually didn't burn off like the M1 did in all of them.
What are your intentions? For both oils will do an excellent job of lubricating your engine and allow you to get many hunded thousands of miles out of the engine.
If you intend to not change the oil again for the next year or two, or are going to race it hard and flog the engine continuously, then you will certainly need the increased molecular stength of the synthetic oil.
Otherwise, the regular Castrol oil will be more than sufficient.
It's better to use crappy oil and change it often than to use superduperoil and change it rarely...but I second the wally world supertec.
I use Amsoil 0w-30 in my ZX2, change it every 10k miles. Which amounts to about once a year. Same with my Jeep.
"I've heard" that the wally world supertec is made by Mobil 1. As in "it came on a pallet marked Mobil 1 from the Mobil 1 plant."
I recommend full synthetics not only for the added engine protection, but also for the improved cold starting and better gas mileage. I've observed a 3% increase in gas mileage by switching to full synthetic on more than one vehicle.
the wally world stuff got high ratings by the people on www.bobistheoilguy.com
Infact supertech filters are better than fram.
Where are their oil ratings? I'd like to see these.
I've been operating under the assumption that synthetic is synthetic, and just buying whatever full synth the local place has a coupon for half price.
Pretty sure Wally world synthetic is not made by Mobil 1, but somebody else. I cannot recall who at the moment.
Is there any filter that isn't better than a Fram?

Sorry, apparently it wasn't them, BUT:

Wrap your eyes around that.
My god, the Aussies pay a lot for oil . The exchange rate is about .95 to the US Dollar, so they are paying about $17 a LITER for Mobil 1. And I whine about anything more than $25 for the 5L jug. In fact my last change I think I the deal was $25 for a 5L jug plus a Mobil 1 filter.
I ended up going with Gtx 5-20. $8.98 for a jug at Advance Auto. Thought it would be good to give it a try since it's usually 4 bucks more for a quart or more.
They also have a 5 qts of Mobil 1 and an M1 filter for $26 deal going right now.
I ran castrol High milage in my old neon, new one has a freshly rebuilt engine, so I'm running synthetic. The truck that leaks a quart of oil a day gets whatever is the cheapest.
on a side note, my dad's last bike, a '91 750 nighthawk was able to use the same filter as my '88 accord. Down side was you had to pull the headers to change the larger bodied Auto stlye oil filter, the smaller bike-spec filter fit thrue fin, but was more exspensive.
Autozone has either 5qt M1 w/M1 filter or 5qt Castrol Syntec w/Bosch filter each for $25.99. Might be a good time to stock up on 0W-30 German Castrol and BMW oil filters :).
I ran my 95 Escort to 280,000 miles on Mobil 1 changed every 15-20K with a Motorcraft filter changed every 10 or so. It didn't burn or leak but a half quart every 10,000 miles.

You old filter is better than FRAM!
A guy who owns a few supercars once told me to avoid FRAM products like the plague. I once had a FRAM fuel filter, the bloody thing leaked through a join in the casing! I won't let any FRAM products near any of my vehicles again.
