Get a 9.25 out of a durango/dakota 3.55 gears are more friendly than the 3.91 or 4.10 in the explorer 8.8. Both have posi and both are available with disc brakes. I'd be one for a newer 5.7 swap with either a 5 speed or maybe a viper t56. But the LS is a much cheaper option and more importantly it is your project not mine.

How is a cherokee the miata of suv's? dont those have solid axles front and rear, and leaf springs?
Its the do all of the off road world. You say solid axle and leaf spring like is a bad thing.

leaf springs are a bad thing when used to locate the axle.

since miata and an LSx + 2wd were mentioned i can only assume were are talking about street driving performance not rock crawling. even then i would rather not have leaf springs sloppily locating the axels.

In reply to aggravator :

The challenge Cherokee from last year got 14th in the autocross with a wore out diff. That is pretty good for a truck with leaf springs.

I am considering this as a daily driver that is kind of a budget Trailblazer SS. It should get better gas mileage then the stock truck and be substantially faster.

I am not planning on doing track days with it, I have a track car for that. I wasn't planning on offroading it because it adds to the expense and I have a 1976 Bronco for that....

I wonder how it would tow?? I assume not very well with the T56, but does anyone know for sure? Talking about maybe towing 5,000 - 6,000 pounds on a double axle trailer with brakes.

as a daily driver / tow rig this would be awesome. I like the TBSS. If a T56 can handle the torque of the LSx, then it should be able to tow 5000lb trailer just fine, if your nice to the clutch.

DO IT!!!!
