I got the absolute base 883 model, which was exactly what I've wanted since 1991. I won't need any more power than that on dirt, and the single front disc will be fine for my needs.

I actually started looking for a '91-92, as those are the only years that combined rigid mounted engine (lighter), chain drive (probably going to convert it anyway) and the five speed (previous years only got four). The five speed isn't really necessary, but what the hell.

I couldn't find one of those and once I decided to look at belt drive bikes, I kept reading how they got so much nicer once they got rubber mounts (2004+). At that point, fuel injection became very tempting and I ended up with a first year fuelie (2007).

Here is a build along the same lines of what your thinking Woody. This is a rigid bike but I still think it's a cool build.
