I might become a biker

Since I was four years old, I used to dream about riding motorcycles (I used a couch cushion as my cruiser until I was 5 or 6). My dad had them all of his life until 1992 when he sold his last one to buy a Mustang.

I have ridden dirt bikes and I've ridden around on the street with my brother's Buell. I'm comfortable with the basics of riding, but after two friends died within six months of each other due to bike accidents (both were under 25--one had a 5 month old baby), it became increasingly difficult to convince myself to buy a bike.

Right now, there is a Suzuki SV650 in my garage next to the Miata. It belongs to my brother who bought it for his girlfriend, but they got her a little purple Buell Blast instead. For $1,200, it's mine.

I guess I need to get a permit, get my license switched over to a New York license (I moved from PA), register the bike, buy some gear, get the title (it's a repo), and insure it.

I just wanted to share my excitement. I think I'm going to go ride it in circles in the garage for an hour or two now.

Bikes are a whole 'nother thing... they are such an immersion kind of experience that it is sometimes hard to be practical about riding. I can get a hard-on just thinking about a wicked up blast thru a twisty section of road. Unlike a car though, lack of bike control WILL kill you. Get some... take a class and then go to a bike race school for some real practical edumication on saving your azz.

Every soccer mom and dooshbag teen on a cell phone is trying to kill you. The good news is... they arent any better at killing you then they are at paying attention if you see them first. Stay frosty. Ride hard.

And I've heard of "chicken strips" but what the hell is this? It's a huge, flat, blistered, chorded strip right in the middle of the tire. I would bet the house that it's from burnouts. This thing has met the ground a quite a few times by the look of it--it was probably a stunt bike.

Nice bike. If you lived closer, I have a set of stock tires off of my old race bike that you could have for free.

But I am in Cleveland Ohio and they are expensive (and a PITA) to ship.

You're probably right about the burnouts.

It's not quite ratty enough to have been thoroughly stunted, and it's not the sort of bike that usually attracts stuntaz, but I'll bet it has been thoroughly abused, especially if it was in the hands of (a) someone who had it repo'd, and (b) repo guys. Usually, if the owner knows the bike will be repo'd (and the owner typically knows this at the moment he signs the loan paperwork), he'll go out of his way to just destroy it.

Great bike for a great deal, sure you wouldn't want to trade for my rats blast? Mine is the perfect starter, smokes like a torch to get you noticed, slips in second to make sure you obey local speed limits, loud as hell, and tops out at 90mph so you'll have to try twice before you lose you license.

One thing about the blast though is 2 tires only cost 180$, buddy with the r1 was talking about that for just one.

If you can put those plastic slider things all over the bike you will need them.

I definitely second the advice to take a class, ideally before you ride it. The process of learning to ride will go a lot easier that way. The MSF class in Georgia is $250, but it's money well spent.

Thanks for your gesture. I'd give you something for them though. Ohio is pretty far away though.

The nice thing is the SV is so many things to so many people, parts, knowledge, and aftermarket are never far away. Even if it sucks, you can part it out and make bank.

$1200? Can I have it?
