Valves and seats gonna be rusty too. Jus a little run time will clean 'em up.
I wouldn't believe a compression test till after it runs.

Those compression numbers were after oil in the plug holes.

While I agree with that... I can't get it to run. I can't even get it to fire one cylinder a single time. I have run a battery dead 5 times cranking it. I get spark, I know I have fuel (plus I also have ether) but no matter what I do, I can't get a single pop. I tried going a bit fore and aft with spark timing, re-adjusted point gap, cleaned points, tried new condenser, coil from the 8N, tested the coil's continuity and amperage draw...
The compression numbers I listed are with oil in the cylinders. After all my cranking and trying, I put more oil in and re-checked compression. 50, 50, 45, 70. No good. I want to get it to run and "bust the cobwebs" but it just won't go. Not a single fire. The other frustrating thing is that there is a rather direct blowby problem. I squirt in some ether and 3 seconds later its puffing out the oil breather.
I'm currently looking for a transmission that will bolt to the D18 and an engine that would bolt to that transmission. So far I have come up with a T98 transmission (rare as hen's teeth) and the possibility of a Slant 6 or early Windsor engine to match up.
Not looking good at this point. Some hard-core research today showed some darned expensive parts. I have to face the reality that this one might be best left to someone with the disposable income to do it right. 'cuz I aint got it right now.
One last ditch effort... the IH Scout forums might have an inexpensive engine for sale.
Ok... dragged it around the field to spin it a bit faster. Totally ghetto'd it ignition wires run from the battery to the cab then back to the coil. That way I can twist them together for spark but pull them apart later because I have no brakes. Sitting beside me is a boat gas tank fed through the hole in the windshield someone had shot. I had to keep squeezing the primer bulb.
Dragged it around for a half hour. Got that thing to pop ONCE. So I got back to the garage and pulled the intake and valve cover. Two valves stuck open and three stuck closed with bent rocker arms. Three lifters seized in their bores, so I suspect a few cam lobes wiped. When I pulled the side panel off to see pushrods and lifers, instead I saw chewed up insulation, mouse feces, and half-eaten nuts. No idea how it got there.
But, at any rate, I will get you mouse manor on film and also get the head off. Best case, reman the head and do a quick hone in the cyilnders. Worst case, full reman.
Or another option. Maybe a 2.8L V6/t5/t-case from an S10? Or a 3.0L Ford with a R5OD and x-fer case. Maybe an I-5 from a colorado/T3550/xfercase
I have a 48k mile IH 345 with 4-speed and a divorced np205 I have no other use for, but I would probably use a Mercedes diesel if it were me. Or a 5.3L truck motor.

My first thought was to do just that... My xfer case is a D18. I found out that they were factory installed on t90s (like mine) and t98s like could be found on some fords and dodges up until 1955. They are rare as hen's teeth. But that transmission could have opened me up to a world of AMC, Dodge, GM and Ford engines.
Looks like I either build this 152 and keep it stock, or I could also grab a whole drivetrain...
3.0L Ford/M5OD/BWxx 2.8L GM/T5/NPxx 3.8 Buick/SM465/NPxx
Can you help me think of some other drivetrains that would fit the bill?
125-180 hp
4x4 tranny and case.
easy and cheap
Needs to be a narrow setup engine. The shape of teh engine bay is very space prohibitive with V-designs. The GM 60-degree V6s should fit, but I don't think the 90 degree 4.3L V6 wold.
Inlines up to 6 cylinders
As long as these engines can come with 4 or 5 speed manuals that have factory provisions for 4x4, I'll consider it.
Fun pics of the mouse manor that was built in the lifter valley...
And one that shows just how far open one of the valves is stuck.

The engine bay in the 800s is really narrow on the 4-cylinder trucks. A traditional 90 degree V8 is a tough fit with a lot of modification. I measured and I think a 302 Windsor would fit, but an SBC won't... at least not without moving it forward 8-10 inches or cutting big sections of the firewall.
Just to be sacrilegious, how about a 2L Suzuki. I think they were available in the Vitara, Tracker and Sidekick with 4WD and put out about 145 hp. A wrecked donor would give you engine, 5 speed, t-case and ecu.
Should be fairly narrow.

because badass. scout = awesome. old broncos = stupid.

Jeebus, if you say so. I learned to drive in one of the damned things.

Because this... http://www.ebay.com/itm/International-Harvester-Scout-Custom-THE-MOST-BEAUTIFUL-INTERNATIONAL-SCOUT-ON-THE-PLANET-/191127075227?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2c800fb99b&item=191127075227&pt=US_Cars_Trucks.
Its one of those rare vehicles that brings nothing or everything.
Scouts are one of those things that 90% of people don't care about, but the other 10% would shoot you in the face just to touch one.

No offense taken. If someone offered me a free Volvo or Vauxhal engine, I'd find a way to weld it in.
ford 300 I6. torque for days, cheap, simple, bullet proof. simple 4 or 5 speed manuals, fairly stout chain drive x-fer cases, and auto-zone parts availability. should be able to pull everything out of an 80's bronco or f150 for under $400. from water pump to tail shaft, even grab the drive shafts.
thats what id do. i love those old ford engines.

That would be a pretty sweet match for this poor thing Curt.
