how does jinxing work? i mean, i want to tell y'all what i've been working on lately (in very general terms since the patent hasn't been awarded yet), but i don't want to jinx it. in the worst case, i'll have my name on a patent and one more line on my resume. in the best case, i'll be towing my Challenge / Lemons / UTCC cars with a much nicer rig!
I think thats enough. You don't wanna jinx it, but give us enough so we can all wish the best for you. Best of luck.
Update 23 Mar 2009: AngryCorvair is no longer unemployed. I'm going to work for Performance Friction, an aftermarket brake component supplier, in Clover SC (about 1 hour southwest of Charlotte NC). Start date is Wed 15 April.
Again, let me know if you need anything, my shop's pretty well equipped and I've got a big car trailer...
Congrats! I always wanted to work for PFC or Alcon or some of those types of companies and be their on-site rep at the track. That's work I could seriously get into (and have experience to excel)!
Clem
Sweetness. A new job and warmer weather!
Congrats Pat!
Good to see that you once again have got the 3 P's!
Sweet! They need any test drivers? I'm already running PF pads on the ThunderTerd.
Thank god you're out of Michigan!
Cuts down on your commute to the challenge too.

Dare I ask?
It's from a Willie D song, so probably not.

It is a Willie Dee reference (Ghetto Boyz)
two of the P's are
Pay and a Place to stay. You can figure out the first.
thanks everybody! what made me stand out from other candidates was my brake component article from the June '08 GRM. they were really into having someone who had both the understanding and the ability to communicate.
and to Joe Gearin, I say in my best Meat Loaf voice:

two outta three ain't bad
[/ML]
i'll have to talk to the wife about the first P.
Congrats! I just put PFC's on my BMW wagon. Supportin' the cause.
Edit: we were marveling over the super nice packaging. Egg crate foam and everything. Very swanky!
AC, are you able to sell your house here, or did you get a relo from PF?
Congratulations and welcome to South Carolina! You won't be far from Carolina Motorsports Park.

oh, about that other thing i was working on:
a good friend from undergrad is now an ER doctor, and is also the director of research at his hospital. he came up with an idea for implementing a kind of therapy for patients who have been resuscitated after heart attack, but he didn't know how to turn the idea into hard parts. so we discussed it a few times, then in a couple of days we built two prototype units and a test stand, and collected some data. The data were favorable when compared to current technology for the same therapy, so we formed an LLC and got a patent attorney / intellectual property guru on board. i provided sketches, descriptions of hardware and test stand, and summary of test procedure and data, and we've got a provisional patent application in the system. we're currently working on FDA approval, looking for venture capital, and working with a medical device development company to build prototypes for clinical trials. exciting stuff, for sure. and if i hadn't been laid off, my buddy the doctor probably wouldn't have contacted me for the engineering.
the end result will be one of the following:
-
someone else has applied for patent on similar device earlier than us (although our searches have turned up nothing), in which case we get nothing.
-
we get our patent, but clinical trials show poor effectiveness or there's no cost-effective manufacturing solution. "patent holder" looks good on resume.
-
patent comes through, clinicals have favorable outcome, and we sell the intellectual property for a one-time payment.
-
same as above, but we negotiate a percentage of the revenue on every device sold, and i finally get that 280SL pagoda i've always wanted.
time will tell.

every house can be sold. not every owner can take the loss required to complete the sale. we're going to price the house to sell in today's market, which means i'm leaving about 75k behind. we look at it as the cost of doing business. my wife and i firmly believe that southeast michigan is no place to be raising children for the next 10 years or so, so we're going to take the loss to move to a more vibrant part of the country. plenty of engineering opportunities in the Carolinas.
my employment agreement includes some relo, but i can't go into specifics. it won't cover my whole loss, that's for sure.

I see Angry working on a NASCAR pit crew in 10 years.
We will miss you up here.
The third p is for parking meter. Congrats with the move. My brother is about an hour from there and loves it.
