I took a tour of the Utica Club brewery the other day. Seems they make multiple brands. they give you two tickets good for two beers of your choice at their "tavern". Unfortunately, I am not a beer drinker so I gave my tickets to a group who was drinking. It all was interesting.

Making multiple brands is really common practice. Lots of breweries can produce more beer than they can sell personally, so they contract brew for other brands. Look closely at the labels on the back of a bottle of a Trader Joe's house brand beer... a lot of them are brewed by outfits like Unibrou and Firestone Walker.

Have you tried Radeberger yet?

In reply to Hoop:

Pretty sure I have. It was a Pilsner.

So far the only ones Pils-types to have actually struck me as somehow special are the Kulmbacher Edelherb and Weltenburger Klosterbier.

Noticed that my go-to beer states on the label "Made Solely from 3 Ingredients". You have to look a little bit to find them, but they are hops, malted barley, and water.

The beer? Zywiec. Polish stuff. The beer snobs will probably come in and say that it is along the same lines as Becks (mass produced swill, just this one without the marketing), but everyone I know who has tried it comes away pleased. The best part? I usually only see it in 20 packs of 22 oz. bottles, all for only $22.00. That works out to about the same price as Bud, actually a little cheaper for me.

I've only ever found it at Costco though, so you might be SOL with Mr. Walton.

No Costco's around NW Arkansas, for some strange reason. We do have a K-Mart and a Target. They don't have beer, though.

The Warsteiner was OK. 3 did not give me a migraine, so that's a bonus. I see they are not quite 12 oz bottles either. Still looking.

No idea if you can get it in the US but I like Breznak Pils quite a bit. Same idea as the German pilsners (the style is more or less continuous throughout northern Germany and western Poland / Czech Republic) but it's a good example of it. Their Schwarzbier and amber lager (called Alt-Böhmisch Bernstein in Germany) is also pretty good.

The fact that it cost, like, 60c a (half-liter) bottle in German supermarkets didn't hurt either. I lived only a couple hours from where it's brewed.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale: Eh. It was OK. No migraine.

Stella Artois: Interesting. Tastes good, available at wally world, doesn't say anything about German purity laws, but then it is from Belgium, "since 1366." Belgium, despite not actually having a government and living off NATO and the unelected EU government, is kinda like Southern Netherlands, so that's a plus. They even speak Nederlanders, at least in the north part.

In reply to Dr. Hess: I had a Becks Beer tonight @ a restaurant that was brewed in Germany and the taste was great! I don't like the American brewed "in the German way" Becks. It has a lousy taste plus I don't like paying for imported beer when it's not imported. Anyone have any idea where I can buy "Brewed in Germany" Becks Beer in NY City, Pa, near Stroudsburg or in New Jersey? If so, please e-mail me info @ Varicci1@yahoo.com Thanks

I love Stella on a hot lawn mowing sort of day. It is best from a keg or in the carboard box (12 or 24 pack) - the six packs at WallyWorld are out where light can ruin them thru the E36 M3ty green glass.
