Are you sure it's a knock? Collapsed HLAs are somewhat common on these motors, and they get pretty loud...
As a bonus, they're also cheap and somewhat easy to fix as long as they aren't on the back bank, which would probably involve pulling a motor.

I think you win - bearing knocks don't go away like that - at least in my limited experience.

Dunno, but I'm sending out a prayer to the God of all pooched things Automotive that you're right. My mechanic also mentioned crank pulley, but I guess we won't know til he goes in and takes a look.
See what your mechanic finds with the pan off, and take it from there. Really isn't hard to replace bearings, more of a pain to get to them.
If it were me, I'd rebuild what you have, that way you KNOW what you have. See what your mechanic finds after he drops the pan. Does sound like you wiped out a main bearing, though. Rings wouldn't make the loud knocking. Loud knocking just idling like that, sounds like a main bearing. Maybe you got lucky and a quick turn of the crank at a machine shop and you'll be OK.
Still, I'd go with rebuilding what you have, not buying another "what condition is it in" from the junk yard.

I'll cross my fingers for HLA. Doubt it's the crank pulley, never seen that go bad either. The three things that "kill" these motors are HLAs, timing belt tensioner (which may also be the culprit, but you'd notice some other things going on), and distributor. (clearly not your issue here)
I bought a new short block to fix my spun bearing issue, and it was much less painful. Sure, you have to pull the engine again, but just swap over the head and off you go.

That's what he suggested.
I've just found a guy with a disassembled KLZE, who'll take $75 for everything. So perhaps the current motor can be saved with donated parts. Will see tomorrow.
Thanks guys
Nice score! Even if you don't use it, for $75, that's nice to have around.
I'm going to start keeping my eye open for a spare, myself!

It means a 3 hour drive, but hell, what a great score. Thanks to my Grassroots brethren, whose white light surely curried me some favour with the Goddess-of-all-things-pooched.

this was not what i hoped to find in a thread of such a great title. :-(
I figured that Lesley had finally crossed paths with Mike Rowe @ a Ford event.

Lesley you may want to start a wish list/goody fund, just in case you get a chance to cover the Tokyo Auto Show.
An engine could fit in a couple of suitcases right?
Lesley, 3 hours in which direction? I'm in Oshawa, and know Toronto/Mississauga pretty well, and have a van, and have a son in Peterborough I like to visit. Can I help?

That is so kind of you!
The engine is in Hamilton though, I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. Fortunately, it's in pieces, because I'm taking my 323 hatchback. I wasn't going to take the block, but for $75 I figured I'll take it all just to make sure I'm covered.

Hooooboy, steering well clear of any reference to blown rods, shafts or bore and stroke on that topic!
No problem. Have a good trip! And good luck with the Engine Revival Project!
Man, sorry to hear that. I second the suggestion of chunking something through Tiger JDM's window.
But before condemning the engine, check this: see if it has a hydraulic timing belt tensioner. It's like a little oil filled motorcycle shock, has a spring and a valve in it. If so, those have been known to leak the oil out and it sounds almost exactly like a rod knock.
EDIT: Turns out it has exactly that. Looks like this:

Yeah, you and Miz Suddard could wind up in a death cage match.
You mentioned it was low on oil. I don't know where it went but my beater quart-every-hundred-miles 944 turbo has a horrible hydraulic lifter noise that sounds like knocking when it gets a quart or so low, so I'm guessing/hoping your "knock" is a flat HLA - now where did your oil go? is the scarier question.

I had a Probe GT with a failing tensioner that sounded like a rod knock.

Any of those options sound good to me right now
Mechanic is first of all dropping the oil pan tomorrow, then deciding where to go. If the rings are causing the oil shortage, then they're going to have to be done.
I'm going to take pictures of the disassembled V6 in the back of my 323 tomorrow...

Thanks, that's a KL engine too, isn't it? I know some years of Probe GT shared identical engine components.
