I have a poster of that shot hanging in my room at my parents house. My uncle got it for me when I was 9. I'm 43 now and it's still hanging up there.

Such a profound photo.

RIP sir

Still out flying by himself at 90. What a badass. There are worse ways to go out.

If you were traveling from somewhere else and saw that out your windshield, it looks like a place you would want to stop and visit.

RIP. What a life he lived. I've known the picture, but never known his name.

I had 2 initial gut reactions to this. First, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he passed before the crash, either a stroke, aneurism, or heart attack. I'd expect a 90 year old pilot to know what he was doing and to be very careful about his flight days and routes to keep them within his abilities.

Second... the passing of time sure does sneak up on all of us. A 90 year old would have barely been old enough to have fought in Korea, but 7 years too young for WWII (Anders fought in neither, he was in the Naval Academy when the Korean conflict ended according to his Wikipedia page).

The first time I saw that picture it absolutely captivated me. Just amazing. It's still stunning. Thanks for posting it. I think it'll have to be my desktop wallpaper.
