Being I was 8 years old or so, it was, quite simply, the most awesome car I'd ever seen. Then, I started learning about cars. I've never owned a Mustang II, and probably never will.
My dad bought one of these back in the day as a left over 77 when the 78s came out. It looked like this one but was white with blue interior and T-tops. Had a V6 and a 4 speed. Kept up with his girlfriends V8 Camaro up to 110. We hit a dump truck head on in the coal fields of VA. The car was totaled the only injury sustained was I had a busted lip where he swung his arm over to keep me from going forward. We called it "blabber mouth" because of the spoiler.

How and why did the Mustang II front suspension become the standard in the US kit car industry? I'm guessing because it's self-contained with no external spring perches, etc. But it's weird to see so many aftermarket parts for Mustang IIs.

Back when the MII was new most hot rods were still using 1930's solid front axles. The Mustang II front suspension was compact, state of the art (for a mass produced domestic car), and as you noticed fairly self contained. They were available in junkyards and fit well under 30's and 40's fenders. Eventually as hot rods became street rods and junked MII's got crushed the aftermarket developed the kits that car common today. Made sense to stay with the basic design since the swap was very popular.

It probably also has a lot to do with the fact that they steer from the front of the spindles, rather than behind. That's not terribly common and it allows more room for the engine.
