Also, that's not a picnic either.
We landed at St. Thomas on our honeymoon, and it was freaky. I'm not really afraid on flights mostly because I can't do anything about it, but this time I wanted to yell, because I was pretty sure the pilot missed the island.

The other reason is that it make doing a go around VERY dangerous. Going down the hill, you can abort the landing for as long as you can get back to flying speed by the end of the runway. In the other direction, you also have to have the speed / power to avoid the hill. MUCH harder to judge!
There was a show on discovery (or similar) about the worlds most dangerous airports. That one was number two as I remember. I think number one was Toncontim, which is pretty similar, but they land larger jets and there are hills on both ends!
