The further away you got from money (in other words, people with something to lose), the closer you got to morons who would prove their courage by standing in front of the cars until the last minute, or trying to hit the cars with their hands as they went by. When FISA nixed Group B they also set rules on spectators, and stages have been cancelled over it.
Should be noted: That's a picture from before the Group B era. That's a Group 4 Audi. The driver is also not going very fast because the car is being countersteered, an AWD car being driven to the limit will be being steered into the corner.
