Those must have been well built buses. It wasn't all that many years ago they quit using them around here, and I remember them from the 70's at least.
In reply to Streetwiseguy:
They lasted pretty much forever. GM made them from 59-77 in the US and until 87 in Canada where I guess the hate people in wheel chairs. Some of ours in NY were on the road for more than 20 years, and many smaller cities are still using them today.
We were using the old GM Fishbowls up until a couple years ago. (all low floors now)
But then we are slow. Apparently we are one of the last cities that still backs our buses out of the terminal.

Wally,
These are Middle wheel drive, yet the engine is in the Back? Or are they rear wheel drive and have some mechanism to control the hinge in snow and other situations where it wants to fold in half?
How does that work? Strange driveshaft? Hybrid drive? Ninja's on treadmills?
Remember the Scott Baio movie when they put the engine from the bus into his car but the nerd had to sacrifice his robot for a heat shield...I have said too much.

That's what a treminal should look like. We have two left like that in one in Queens and one in Hempstead, all the others have been built over What is the third one in? a Nova?

Rear engine, rear drive. That is why we lose so mahy of them in the snow. We put these make believe chains on the rear wheels made from bungee cords and springs because we can't have real chains. They keep the rear from fishtailing uncontrolably when you give it gas. The middle wheels are just as bad as the rears though so you have to be careful not to cause it to jacknife on acceleration. Eventually the potholes and road plates cut through the "Chains and you are stuck, normally with either the middle or rear almost touching a parked car. It doesn't take much either. We chain them up for an inch of snow. We were able to free most of them with shoels and elbow grease but some were stuck in such creative manners that we needed to drag them out with a wrecker.

Our entire city fleet is Novas now, but we have basically a separate fleet for the university service. The university service is funded by the university, so it is basically a charter service. All the students ride for free, (just show their student cards) and they have 20 minute service back and forth to school. At peak times we have 3 buses at a time leaving the terminal every 5 min for the school.
These buses are mostly MCIs and a few Orions. Novas get used too, but only if all the city runs are covered. But you can cram more into a MCI than a Nova, and wheelchair access isn't an issue.
Obligatory hotlink, MCI and a Nova
You just need to get them longer. Are you with GO? I picked up a driver from there a few years back and swapped pins with him. It looks like the buses in your pics, but an older orion.
So if the engine is in the caboose, can you take a normal bus, hack off the back and mate on the bendy bit? Then you'd have twin engines and drive on two axles
Found while looking for a picture of a 2CV Sahara, but this is much cooler.

Now add some armor plating and poke a machine gun out of 1 or 2 holes and that'd be really neat.

I am pretty sure that Happy Jack is from Peterborough ON.
You can just see the city name on the front of the buses and the signs show Kawartha etc.

Cool! A '69 Barracuda coupe in the background.
Can't tell if that's a '67-73 Valiant 4-door at the other end of the block or not.
