Absolute mint 1987 Nissan Micra. Booked it for a comparo with the current Micra. Guess which one I prefer? It's only got 56 horsepower - but it weighs 750 kg and has a rather lovely 5-speed gearbox. Surprisingly fun to drive.

I haven't seen one of those for a long, long time. What sort of misguided soul kept that one so perfect? Grandmas car?

The US never got the micro, right? Is that Canadian domestic or import?

No we never got one here. That's such a cute little car.

Canadian, imported from Japan. Google 87 Micra, and chances are pretty good that this little car will come up. It was owned and babied by an older lady, and Nissan traded her one of the first current Micras to come off the line for it. She calls her new car "Baby 2". This one's obviously had a thorough restore. Seals are mint, interior's immaculate, all the hinges and fasteners have been replaced. Mine was an auto, it's a completely different car with the stick. What a blast to drive! No power steering, so it's a bit of an effort to park.

Neat! (As kids used to say when I was one.)

Will your nephew be joining you for this test, or do you figure it's one-and-done for that?

"Booked it?"

Please elaborate.

Around here our fleet management companies don't have time travel devices, and even if they did, everyone knows that only biological material can make the leap.

Nissan acquired this little puppy to display at the launch of the current Micra. When I saw it, I immediately approached them for a future Driving video - and since my first car was its doppleganger, I kind of had an "in". It actually lives at the dealership where it had been serviced all of its life, as the beloved "Baby" of an older woman, who gave it up in return for one of the first current gen Micras to come off the line. It's not actually available for any other test drives :-P.

i love those old hatchbacks. I think nissan had a better version, though:

That's right, it's twincharged. Still only about 100hp, but awesome nonetheless.

Yeah, they only made 10,000 of those. Saw one, years ago, in gunmetal grey. It was gorgeous.

I honestly can't tell which is better. This, or Mazda Canada's time capsule FD.

Fantastic! I loved my 5spd Micra. Swapped a set of 13" Civic rims onto it for even more fun. Its such a willing and cheerful little car. You can flog and beat on it all day long and it loves you for it.

Some of the thinnest sheet metal ever.
