So yesterday I had a rather unexpected cooking oil fire in one of my favourite stainless steel pots. I got it out quick enough but now the pot has burned-on black gunk all over the bottom and the sides. What's the best "grassroots" way to get this crud off?

Zep degreaser, CLR, and goo-gone, are all completely unknown and unavailable around here, before anyone suggests them.

Mechanical removal FTW. A stainless steel pot scourer from your local supermarket should do the trick.

I wonder if that vinegar method would work? I know acid will do it, but what effect that would have on the steel, don't know.

Vinegar will not harm SS in the slightest.
