Ugh, this thread reminds me. I have an accident on my record, making my insurance insane. Why?
Well, I was visiting my folks a few years ago and had to go somewhere. My mom says "oh, take my car, don't use up your gas." So I'm driving on the freeway in her car, doing about 55, and traffic suddenly stops. I get on the brakes, and despite ample following distance, I'm still doing about 15 or 20 when I plow into the Mustang in front of me. Exchange insurance info, drive back to the house with the smashed up front end of the car, and what does my mom say to me?
"Oh, when it was in the dealer for an oil change a few weeks ago, they said I needed new brakes, but I didn't want to spend the money."

and thankfully my partner is almost as much of a car nut as i am. she learned by simply going out to her car when she got one at 16 pulling out the manual and going over everything she could. then picking up a haynes manual and because well it was a used car replacing the timing belt water pump plugs wires. and hoses on a 92 dsm herself all before she was 16 and a half and without anyone showing her how to she just had decided it was best she knew how to do.
Owning a 92 DSM is pretty much a forced tutorial on vehicle maintenance. Especially one that a 16-year-old could afford.
