My mind wonders quite a bit. I'll find myself thinking how to fit a 351-W in the back of a 69' Fastback Mustang, in the same 20 minutes I'm thinking about how to graft the gland that creates the Antelope's horn to the head of one of my horses so I could have a real Unicorn.

What are your weird, strange, and completely out of this world ideas that you're constantly thinking of? Those are my 2 at the moment, subject to change instantly...

I expected that about as much as the Spanish Inquisition.

Housing... finishing my parent's basement, or building a small house on the property, or buying a house a few towns over for $20k, or finishing a large Amish shed...

Building a simplified 5 sheet teardrop camper.

Motorizing either my canoe or jon boat.

Gas motor kit on a bike, road or mountain?

I don't even want to think of my odd car and motorcycle ideas.

I don't see how it wouldn't work. Of course I'm no surgeon/vet, but the idea is sound. LOL

You shouldn't drink with breakfast.

I've been contemplating a solid lifter, high compression, 1.7L Mazda B6 for a few days though. So I shouldn't talk.

My mind's been coming back to what would seriously be involved in starting a car company, specifically one focused on lightweight, simple, easy-to-work-on cars, and if there's any way to make that remotely successful.

Basically it swirls around in my brain, and the closest anything gets is to emulate what Factory Five does, only using clean-sheet designs and having more than ZOMG sports cars (for instance, a small 2WD pickup akin to the minitrucks of the '80s and early '90s).

I always get stuck on the costs of low production, though. My idea would be something that could be sold for under $20k, and I just don't think that's doable outside of the kit car world.

....

And then I go back to thinking about what vehicles might make a more-than-just-the-sum-of-their-parts improvement with just a straight-across stock-for-stock same company motor swap; i.e. IS300 + 2JZ-GTE, Miata + 3.7L V6, F150 + V6 Powerstroke, Element + Odyssey V6, that sort of stuff.

That's been done with goats, but in the end, you still just have a goat with one horn, which, by definition, is technically a unicorn, though it's probably not what you're looking for.

I've been working on that for 4 years with a guy. Prototype is done and first 3 production chassis are in the jig being built as we type. Should have #1 here in the states in June-July if all goes well. I can PM you if you want with more details...

Every time I see a Geo Metro, I want to put a 4G63 in the back. Or pull the whole Eclipse or EVO drivetrain and shove it under there.

I also have sick thoughts of a tube chassis (or 3) with a badass drivetrain installed and different bodies I can just slip over it and bolt on. I'd need different chassis though for a short wheel base and long wheel base car, like a sub compact, compact, and full size.

Feel like driving an AWD Geo Metro? Slip the Geo body on the SWB chassis. Feel like driving a sick Crown Vic? Slip that body on the LWB chassis.

Lately for some reason I've been wanting to take a couple of somewhat mediocre Buicks with interesting looks and make the car Buick should have made. For example:

Buick Reatta:

Just look at it - styling like this should have gone with a mid engined, luxury Fiero, not a cut down FWD sedan. Take the stock motor out up front, get a 3800 SC and a Getrag 5 speed, put it in the trunk.

Mid '90s Riviera:

Start with one in black and make the sequel to the Grand National that Buick never did - turn the engine 90 degrees, use a turbo instead of a supercharger, maybe adapt a Corvette IRS.

Non Buick idea: I want to make a hybrid out of my Suburban - but in a way that I end up with more torque and something that gives tree huggers fits. I'm thinking put a locomotive traction motor under the hood, raise the floor behind the middle seat for batteries, and a microturbine or surplus helicopter turbine to recharge them.

Dual string kites with a retractable string setup like you'd see on a dog leash;

Steam engine attached to all of the heat sources on a car powering a generator for a real hybrid.

Last year Olds Aurora converted to RWD, Indy Aurora engine (flat plane crank, dry sump, injected, E85, 600 HP) with basically a road race suspension. Make it a clone of the TT baseball glove interior and DD it with the kids in the back in carseats.

I've said this one before, but one day I want to put together the following:

Retro-future 1970s kit car body (think Nova GT or some such)
Small-ish (100~150kW) gas turbine engine driving a generator (aircraft APU?)
Two electric motors, one for each rear wheel
NO differential, transmission or mechanical drivetrain - all power transmission done electrically

Mount the motors centrally in the car and run an axle out to each wheel to avoid unsprung weight, just like an IRS setup with a conventional diff. To be really ambitious, put a battery pack in that stores unused power from the turbine and releases it at WOT ("powah~booooost!"), along with a regenerative braking system. Swath the interior in black leather & LED displays of course.

How would the end product not be awesome? It'd be like getting a head start on the future - the good future we were promised as kids!

Put a J series motor and transaxle out of an Esteem, Aerio, or SX4 in it, and keep it all Suzuki. I'd like to build a turbo'd J23 from an Aerio in the back of a Metro/Swift for the challenge. Lot's of motor, and not too wide. I'm sure you could make it look fairly stock, and do wheelies with it.

I haven't thought about this one for a while, mostly because the hardware is getting impossible to find, but a slammed tintop/all body Sidekick, with 4.3 and AWD transfer case from an AWD Astro would be pretty bitchin'. Put some wide, low pro rubber on, and tear up the autox course with it.

I started a sci-fi novel recently about the first attempt made by man to travel to another star. The ship is being constructed in space and the characters spend all their time there working on the project. It begins as the chief engineer/designer makes his first trip from earth to the construction site. The ship is nearing completion and he is accompanied by his wife and young son. The journey will soon begin.

I spent some time at Books-a-Million and couldn't find anything else that is exactly using the same theme or title.
