Where my parents live, homeowners like to treat their deer to expensive shrubberies and small trees. Landscapers in the area get a lot of repeat business when the deer munch the shrubs.
A friend of ours lived in a heavily deer populated area. He had planted a row of flowers AND some kind of very hot peppers. Apparently, a deer came along, red flower, red flower, red flower, PEPPER!!!!!!!! Our friend reportedly heard this pained, other-worldly howling. Needless to say, the remaining flowers were just fine....
That's mobile dinner.
Put up some trail cams, you may be surprised by what you see.
