I am assuming your diagram showing the source at the fixture is correct. The other time 120V could be at a switch is if it is used as a junction.

The switch appears to be the first stop for the wiring from the crawlspace, and was indeed used as a junction.

Ok, then the neutral must pass through that box and get directly to the fixture. It DOES NOT connect to the switch.

Everything else about my previous instructions is the same.

Wait, what?

How does the switch switch if power doesn't go through it?

Just the neutral passes through without connection to the switch.

I think I look at this every time I try to do some home wiring, lol.

Switches NEVER have power (meaning, they never have both the hot and neutral). They only BREAK the circuit of the hot.

Hot goes through the switch. Neutral does not.

If you put hot on one terminal and neutral on the other, you would dead short it the minute you turned it on.

Exactly. The actual feed wire may come into the box for the fixture first in some cases, but you still feed it down to the switches and then back to the actual fixture.

Whenever I get old enough to take free classes at a tech school, I am going to take an electrical class. And an AC class.

Got that figured out. Bad wiring and a bad switch.

Now there is a sweet hole cut in the wall, and then we're on to the stairway and the wiring in the kitchen.

Thanks guys!
