When we had the beater Volvo 240 I'd get comments about half the time I filled it up at the gas station.
The comment always went something like "you know you're putting regular gas in there right?"
Me: "Uh, yeah?"
Dude: "Well, I saw you drive up, and I think that's a diesel."
Used to get comments about my 240GT as well, mostly along the lines of "who puts stripes on a Volvo".
Most commented-on car I ever had was my '86 Hyundai Pony. I had swapped an old 1970s vintage twin-Solex setup on the Mitsubishi-sourced powerplant (G16), an open exhaust, and Superlites. Getting gas was an adventure. Right after that was the '79 GTi, mainly from guys who thought it was funny that I had tried to get away with putting Golf badges on a Rabbit (it was a German-market car brought back by a returning serviceman)
A month or so ago a guy RAN out of his building to talk to me about his dad's two grey-market 124s. Somebody today asked me if the 500 was electric.
The Astro catches nothing but E36 M3 from 90% of my friends and co-workers. Over time though, it's proven it's worth to many (it holds a lot of beer and people).
Pretty much everybody that sees my truck ('85 Chevy C30 Dooley) says "Hey, if you ever decide to sell it, let me know, okay?"
The MS3 would get a few comments here and there because it had stuff that people who knew what they were looking for could spot (like the FMIC). My Vette ('99 FRC) would likewise get a few comments from people who either knew it was kind of rare or just thought there was something odd about it.
But so far the Volt takes the cake. I get questions on a near daily basis—many of them quite astute and legitimate. But it also shocks me that people seem to have little or no resistance to calling me a "greenie faggot" or an "Obama humper" rather openly. The car is an absolute lightning rod (not literally, although that probably would reduce charge times).
It's gotten so I don't even wear my "I don't cause global warming, but my boyfriend does" shirt anymore.
jg
P.S. I'm totally about to copyright that shirt so no one better steal it.
Every once in a while when I had my N/A FC someone would come up to me and start talking about how he used to own an RX-7. Other than that, every car prior to my Mustang never got complimented. That included my Mazdaspeed3. Of course, it was a silver 1st. gen, which probably looks like Generic Hatchback #1976463 to anyone not in the know.
I have been getting lots of compliments on my Mustang, the color, wheels, and taillights especially. I guess something about a big hunk of Americana just does it for the normals. I've had a few folks look annoyed when they find out it's a sixxer, but 305hp and 27mpg shuts them up quick.
For my toyota pickup it is usually about how either these trucks go for ever or is it for sale.
For the mercedes it usually is regarding either how dirty it is, how I need to clean the rims, how it has been resprayed since everyone knows more about my car than I do, etc. I don't stick around long enough now to listen to comments. Recently it revolves around where the front bumper is.
Yes, the 2.5RS Subie gets a few nice car comments every other fill up.
I've never driven a car where people tell me how much they like the look of it.
When I drive around with the top down, every dick in town asks how fast my s2000 is and if I want to race. -__-
Other than that, not really. I had one kid hang out of a truck window and tell me 'nice Porsche'.

You need snowflake die-cut vinyls. They're out there.
I have a street Spridget and MGB as well as a Miata (daily driver).
You can see them Here
New Jersey does not allow self service gas, so every fill-up of the British cars ends up in a conversation, even if the gas-jockey is a foreign guy. The Miata not so much.
I get a lot of older guys (my age) commenting about the MGB.
They'll say, "I used to own one of those when I was younger."
And I'll say, "Yep, me too. And I still own it."
Yeah, Brit cars always start a conversation which includes this part: 'My [fill in blank] was absolutely the worst [nasty descriptive phrase] ever built, it [horrid major failure] every [short distance/time] but man I wish I still had it'.
jg, we didn't know your boyfriend was responsible for global warming. We learn more disturbing things about you every day.
Ha, I started a 4 page topic that wasn't about politics or religion.
My speedwell blue MkII Sprite hot rod has given me insight into what it must be like for a 6 foot tall blonde woman with big bahubbas - you're a one-person parade, all the time. It turns out that 42% of the US population either owned a Spridget, had a parent who did, or knew someone who crashed one at 150 mph. Sort of like everyone who's friend died motorcycling when the "had to lay it down".
The M3 is in full NASA TT trim now w/ vinyl number and class stickers and all the contingency stuff plus the transponder on the front and brake duct hosing sticking out. It does no blend in. What surprises me is that the general population ~doesn't~ notice it more. People are so oblivious when behind the wheel that a real race car can be next to them and it doesn't register.
Want stupid comments buy a prowler. Just drop dead weird questions.
Women left a set of panties and her phone number on my 356 speedster.
My wife would get marriage proposals in the Ferrari. Like follow her to the next lght and profess their love.
I would walk back to the 65 cobra to people in the drivers seat all the time. One time to a 18 year old blond who's dad had named her Shelby after he crashed his and started dating and married one of his nurses. Drove her home and scared the living crap out of her.
I've had three people comment favourably on how nice my Chev Astro looks. That would be the nice one I bought from ECM and it really stands out in Michigan because it has zero rust .
I have a 3rd-gen RX7, which is supposed to be really cool or whatever, but no one has ever said a single thing to me about it.
I have had quite a few people tell me that they liked my Accord.
When my Miata was stock I had another reputed Miata owner at a gas station tell me the daisy rims were made out of iron, incredibly heavy and I should get rid of them asap.
Had a police officer ask me how fast my RSX was. "It's as fast as the speed limit, sir."

Awesome! Glad to hear she's still turning some heads, she is a good looking van.

Did you call?
What size and brand? That should give some clues as to call-worthiness.

Ours is gray for just that reason. Though I did run into a cop while I was walking out of a freeway rest area restroom:
Him: "Hey, is that one of those fast ones?"
Me: "...ummm... yes?"
Him: "I thought so, caught some kid going XXX mph in one a few weeks back."
I don't recall what XXX was, but it wasn't slow.
Talked to him for a bit more and then got on my way.
When I drove my turbo RX-7, people used to comment often on how it sounded (best comment was "a wood chipper gargling chainsaws").
When I drove my black 88 GXL, people would comment once in a while about how good it looked. I should've kept that car.

I have had a number of cars that got the notice you are asking about but without a doubt, the Elise got more attention than all others combined. By comparison, the GTO is invisible and the Carrera is a mustang II.
You couldnt drive it anyplace without giving a tour. The insurance agent across the street also has a number of great cars(Porsches, Loti, Morgan, Mini, etc) and I am sure that we have been responsible for many wet dreams for dads and sons on those nice weather days when we park them on the street.
