Well, back in mid-september I did the interview and formal application along with the background check. The next step was the fire department meeting (first wednesday of oct) where they would vote me in to the department. Then the fire police meeting (second tuesday of oct) to vote me in as fire police.
I called the fire police chief in early November and he said he would check the status of my enlistment but he never got back to me. Kinda strange that I was more or less begged to be one because they currently had 18 guys to fill 43 positions, but then nothing is happening.
So the update is... I can't get any updates.

It's quite simple, really. One of the unfilled positions is the guy that calls applicants to let them know that they've been accepted for the position!

Actually, Curtis's initial description is pretty close to what I generally picture when I think of these people as well, although I was picturing a '90s Exploder rather than a Cavalier. Perhaps not coincidentally, I'm also a Carlisle resident. From what I have observed, any position associated with a local fire department is instant redneck street cred in central PA, a fast track up the camouflage hierarchy. Thus, these sort of positions seem to attract self-important folks who want an excuse to put big flashy lights on their truck.
Not trying to take anything away from what they do, I know enough cops, EMTs, and other first responders to know I couldn't stomach a lot of the stuff they deal with on a regular basis and I appreciate that someone is willing to take it on. Just sharing my own somewhat humorous and rather cynical observations.

Agreed. I have nothing against rednecks in the camouflage hierarchy, but there is a lot of truth to this. Certainly not all of them, but Carlisle is an astonishingly redneck town.
