I love this article

In the cursed and comedic annals of the Detroit Lions – the 0-16 campaign, the one playoff victory in 51 seasons – it makes perfect sense that their quarterback competition might be decided by a pile of Saxony. Actually, we’re not sure what kind of carpet Daunte Culpepper(notes) has at his house. We only know that Lions coach Jim Schwartz told the Detroit Free Press the veteran QB “sort of stubbed” his foot on some carpet and it required eight stitches. The bizarre injury may be enough to force Culpepper out of Thursday’s preseason finale that was supposed to decide the starting quarterback’s job. Now rookie Matthew Stafford(notes), the No. 1 overall pick out of Georgia, is in strong position to take the job for Week 1. It’s not like there’s any other competition as third-stringer Drew Stanton(notes) is out with a knee injury too. Tuesday at practice, the Lions used just one quarterback, Stafford. “We put an ad on craigslist for a quarterback today for practice, but nobody answered,” Schwartz joked.

They are right around the corner from me (really- I'm about 2 miles from the lions practice facility... although, considering how well it's being used, I thought it would make a great place for a new movie studio, but that's another story)- I should stop by to try out. Can't be much worse.

I thought you were going to talk about how Arsenal were getting along and how they got robbed by Man U.

See, that's what growing up in Detroit with the lions (small l on purpose) will do, force you across the pond for real futbol!

Go Gunners!

Hey, you could always be a Bengals fan like me....

We finally sign our #1 pick and 2 days later he breaks his foot - oh, and our franchise QB has a tender ankle now going into the start of the season. But hey, our defense looks like it might be halfway decent this year....

one of my good friends from high school is currently a starting lb for your bengals. His number is Cinco Cinco.

As far as the Lions go.......well must suck to be a fan. And why is their only one sports franchise in that sports a mascot/team name related to cars?

My theory is that there's something in the silver paint on those helmets that makes everyone who plays there stupider.

My favorite story of misguided motivation turning into futility was in Jacksonville a few years ago.

New coach Jack del Rio needed a catchy phrase to unite the team during training camp, so he came up with the ever motivational slogan "keep chopping wood." The team went so far into selling the philosophy that they brought a large hunk of wood into the locker room, complete with an axe. Del Rio would occasionally punctuate motivational locker room speeches—most certainly peppered with wood and wood chopping metaphors—by chopping some of the aforementioned wood.

At one point, punter Chris Hanson was attempting to motivate himself, or perhaps his teammates—or perhaps just trying to save money on heating his house by stealing supplies from the office—by chopping some wood when the axe glanced off of the giant stump and into his left shin.

Doctors saved the leg, likely as a constant reminder of Hanson's shame, but he didn't kick a football for nearly a year after the incident. He presumably helped support himself during his time away from the game by signing autographs at logging and timber trade shows.

Go Jags.

The Detroit Zoo was the premier US zoo for about half a century. Lions and Tigers no bears... oh my.

Being a lions(no capital) fan is about the only thing worse than being a Bills fan. At least the lions are facing a win-win situation....they could be the first team to put back-to-back winless seasons together, or, if they win a game, to improve 1000%. As a Bills fan, I have only mediocrity(or worse) to look forward to. The Bills are so bad, they are giving away "home field advantage" to foreign countries!

BEARS, Bratwurst, Italian sausage, beer, Ditka, Bulls, Butkis,

Dis year I humbly predict Da Bears 16-0. Dey will also be da only team to shut out every opponent, and never give up a point. Dis is unless Da Bears have to play Iron Mike himself, but that would cause a massive shift in da poles and da world as we know it would cease to exist.

Having watched Mr. "Crybaby" Culter for a couple of seasons in Denver, I say........No .

Being a Detroit sports fan sucks. Other than the Wings, (and when I lived there, they sucked, dry from '54-55 to '96-97) all you get is the Tigers in the playoffs ever 10-15 years, the Pistons in the championship every 10-15 years, and the lions.

That's why I've started rooting for these guys:

As a lions fan, there's nothing I can say to defend them. They might be a somewhat legitimate NFL team this year and squeak out 4 wins or so, but that's it. I do like the new coaching staff, but I liked the last group at first, too. So who knows???

Stafford was fun to watch at Georgia. I hope he does well in the NFL.

I'm a partial bills fan by way of my whole family being from buffalo and my parents/brother being huge fans. It is sad and I'm a Bucs fan myself so I'm sticking my hopes in the college football season in that the Gators will win another championship. Yes I graduated from UCF but I have time, money, blood, sweat, and tears vested into the University of Florida so I am allowed to be a fan.

In reply to minimac:

you'd be suprised how many cowboys and bills fans there are in europe because of all of the superbowls between the two in the early 90's. a lot of the time that would be the only game shown in europe all year.

There's Bills fans everywhere, because everyone's left town! LOL, but not really I love the Bills and my father-in-law is on their Wall of Fame but with the emotionless Dickie boy in charge again it's going to be yet another 7-9 season I fear.

I hear you. I even feel you. I grew up in Port Richey, was a die hard Bandits fan and bled Orange and Blue in college, I am a Bucs fan primarily. Just hoping that Raheem punting Jagoff was a good idea.
