Article below was posted on our company's intranet site. These numbers are new to me and I thought I'd pass the info along.
Did you know that each time you dial 411 for information your phone bill
is automatically charged? There's a better, less expensive way: Instead
of using 411, use Google's 411 service: just dial 1-800-GOOG-411 to look
up an address or phone number and Google will text you the information
or forward you to the number.
There are other similar services such as ChaCha: dialing 1-800-2CHACHA
allows you to ask any question imaginable and have the answer texted
back to you for free.
There's more; Free 411: 1-800-FREE-411 and Tellme: 1-800-555-8355 are
other services that provide methods of getting free information as well
as things such as the latest news, stock quotes, movies, and lots more.
i bet you could use his canoe to go fishing for flounder.
Not exactly breaking news...phone companies have been charging for directory assistance for a long time now. Snopes confirms the other numbers listed above, by the way.

Y'all are getting a little trigger happy with the canoe calls, don't you think? This is not spam. Maybe not news to you, but I don't think the original poster is getting any money from Google or ChaCha.
OT: ChaCha makes me think of Shirley Muldowney.
for non-smartphone people, I highly recommend the Google 411 service. it's pretty awesome
Yes, all the info above is valid.
Charges of $1.79 per call is what Sprint charges for their 411 service.
It is a pretty good revenue generator.
Seems that the OP's company is trying to cut down on employees spending by recommending alternatives.
This seems like good avise to anyone so...Thank you is the more apporpriate answer.

I know people who answer the ChaCha requests. A lot of college kids do it because you can text a question in, and then the Chacha person looks it up and texts the info back. the college kids will do it during a boring class, answering chacha questions that is. (I work at a Major University)
I knew (rhymes w/ canoe) that 411 charged, but I did not know about the other services. Maybe I'm just old.
No checks from Google, yet. They use PayPal, right?
Not a canoe at all. I have the Google 411 number programmed in my phone and use it often. The only thing I don't like about it is that the voice capture process is overly sensitive to background noise (which can be a problem in a car).
