I was told the same thing as an apprentice. It's a fallacy.

Especially because electricians don't have to lie on their backs on a cold concrete floor. At least not in the field I work in.

I would love to have a ceiling mount gas unit, but my pocket book won't allow it before the snow flies.

They definitely will. Wife wanted one of fireplace looking propane ones in the family room we added to the house. After the first winter we had to replace the ceiling as it was all buckled and sagging. Ended up getting a stove type that uses a double chimney pipe. It draws air from outside down the outer part of the chimney pipe and exhausts the combustion gasses out the center.

Ok for some reason I hadn't thought to check Craigslist for used furnaces. I'm going to be relocating the furnace in my shop and it's just an 80% efficient one. Well I found several 93-97% efficient furnaces in the $200-$300 price range which would be paid for in no time between the cheaper venting (pvc sidewall instead of steel to chimney or through roof) and lower utility costs.

Check your local CL. A used furnace sounds perfect if you're on that strict of a budget.
