Just doing some quick desk-calendar calculations, it looks like a 4.1 ratio volvo 122 rear end with a ~48" blade and the smallest wheel/ tire combo I could fit might come "close enough", for brush-hog duties, pulled around 10 mph with my tractor. This is intriguing to me....stay tuned.

If you don't have Popeye forearms yet, you will before the end of the summer, but for $250 you need to get that. Or better yet, lowball him.
Truth. I chased a Bunton walk-behind for a couple years while in college, circa 1987-88. My forearms are still disproportionately large. Back then, i was so ripped, my abs had abs.
I won't be satisfied until the mower blade tips go supersonic, which is about 770mph at 70F at sea level.

Deck rusted through? Definitely low ball that! No real "landscaper" will want it. Weld some scrap over the holes and go to town.

I would have zero intention of walking behind it; rather, dragging it behind the disco. Thoughts? Bolt a trailer coupler to it and call it a day?
Edit: Actually the deck looks so rusty the coupler is probably a non-starter :/
You Southern boys don't know from rust. 'Round these parts we'd call that "solid, with a little surface rust".
In reply to volvoclearinghouse :
Indeed we don’t. By the grace o’ gawd.

I didn't mean to suggest that you actually use it as intended. Just weld up that three blade deck and find a way to drag it behind the Disco.
Tackling “mower B” again today...though the urge to grab this & be done with it is strong.

I didn't know that those existed, but damn that is a nice idea. It would be great to be further away from the engine. Plus it would be a great excuse to buy a quad.
In reply to Woody :
I didn't need to see that either. I've been threatening to get rid of the plow truck and get an ATV with a plow. Being able to reduce the mower too would be a huge boon in reducing some machinery.
Probably faster too since the hydrostatic drive lawn mower doesn't have brakes and scares the hell out of me on the hill.
Swisher is apparently “the one to buy” too. And that appears to be a screamin price on one.
Didn’t get the other mower running yesterday. I’ll drop it off with my small engine guy and see if he has any cheap/free push mowers lying around.
You're doing it wrong. You're supposed to post a craigslist ad saying something like "PORE SINGUL MUTHER OF 3 KIDS NEEDS A GOOD FREE LAWN MOWOR. PLEZE HELP AND GOD BLES."
I admittedly haven't read through the whole thread, but the best bet is to just get a "gang mower". They don't need engines, and yes, you can tow it behind your vehicle of choice!
Although, a bunch of "Grassroots-Style" (TM) motorized mowing decks dragged behind said vehicle of choice would be way better.

I have one of these you could have if you have a way to get it down there from Ohio. One wheel hydro motor is bad so it just spins in circles.
In reply to The0retical :
I have a ~12 year old version of that exact trail mower. I tow it behind and offset from my riding mower, so I end up with about 90" of cut when going straight. I run around the edges and obstacles with just the riding mower and then hook up the trail mower for the bulk of the cutting. It dropped my job from 2.5 to 1.5 hours.
Couple of downsides, though -
- it's hard to accurately place it, and if it's the only mowing deck, 44" isn't all that wide
- it doesn't really mulch, so if the grass is long, I end up with yellow cuttings on top after they dry out
- It bounces on uneven ground much more than the riding mower, so in places I end up with a sine wave of grass length with a ~1.5' period.
Having said that, the 1 hour reduction in mowing time at least once a week is why I still use it.

I've had this one for about 6 months and tow it with a Kawasaki Mule. It works very well so far. I have to use a push mower to get the tight areas, but it rips through the open spaces quickly.
GAME ON, MOTHERberkeleyERS!!!
Oh yes one of my favorite dumb...I mean amazingly genius projects is back.
