Our club is contemplating a computer-based T&S system where the base computer broadcasts wirelessly, and staff can connect to that on wifi-capable devices, and competitors can get live timing info on their smartphones.

So, I'll need a wireless router with a detachable high-gain omnidirectional antenna that I can mount on the EZ-up. I'd like it to be cheap but effective... any suggestions? Thanks.

I think most of us have owned this model so you likely could find someone with one in a drawer somewhere... I have one that has prob seen 5+ years of use... I've replaced it with a newer wireless n/ac model but recently just put it back into service as a data bridge for my roku which has always been a bit flaky on wifi... so DDWRT firmware and a few min of time has turned the old router into a stable way of getting wifi to the old roku

add a good unidirectional antenna and have fun

Our club is using a WiFi network to connect multiple computers. At first, I bought some $50 Dlink home routers. These had limited range and were not weatherproof, so we had occasional connection drops and issues with heat. Then we bought these...

High power WiFi

High-gain omni antenna

All of our problems went away. You also need a Power Over Ethernet box and a switch (if you want to plug anything in directly). Total cost was about $150 per set up. Not cheap, but the reduced error rate (practically zero) has made it very worthwhile. We can get roughly a 70% signal at 400 ft.
