Taking my anime & manga loving daughter to Ohayocon (www.ohayocon.org) today. Wish me luck...

Good luck! Cons are actually pretty fun. Just don't let the sweaty teens hug you (which they probably will try to do).

False start. Didn't even make it out of town this morning.

That loud exhaust noise coming from the Maxima turned into a dragging pipe. No problem, turn around and go back and use the van. The van didn't even make it out of the garage - tried to start it up and the voltage regulator blew. Second time in four weeks.

So I spent the afternoon getting a new cat-back on the Maxima and then swapping the alternator on the van.

Hopefully we'll make if further tomorrow....

So I'm not the only one who has an anime fanatic daughter.

Trying again here shortly, at least the Max is a lot quieter now. Too bad my lighter wallet from yesterday's repairs won't get me better gas mileage.

I used google's amazing power's of future prediction, and found out what your daughter will look like when she is twenty:

Please, PLEASE get her off that stuff. Its one thing to be a nerd, dork, or geek, but a completely seperate thing to be an anime lover. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T DO THAT TO HER!

you can hate me all you want.. but I am one of the people who helped bring this fad to life.

Okay, then. What's a con? Or do I want to know?

Convention. Best known for example sci-fi cons, comic book cons, gaming cons, etc. Though arguably SEMA is also a con just for gear heads instead of fans of typical nerdy pastimes and hobbies. The fan boy con normally have con somewhere in their name: DragonCon, ComiCon, GenCon, ConClave, ConFusion, PenguiCon. DragonCon being the biggest scifi con. ComiCon for comic book fandom. GenCon is for gaming. The other three are annual scifi cons in the Detroit area.

It's weird how attractive girls do Cosplay for the attention. Animes version of booth babes?

^^ I say arguably because some like to distinguish between industry trade show and convention. I am not one of them. Absolutely SEMA is the ultimate carcon.

racinginc215 you say your daughter went to a con in Troy which one? I help to run ConVocation. RenCen last year I believe was the World Steam Punk Expo.

You know, the cynic in me often thinks that. However, I realize that there may in fact be a few hot girls out there that just genuinely enjoy dressing up as cartoon characters.

Hard life they have, those hot girls.

Only been to one, there was almost a fight because I was teasing a "Pokemon" hater, telling him that Pokemon was a real anime.

Younger male, older female, check.
Young male needs more training in his martial art to succeed, check.

Only thing missing is having to "save the world", which Ash didn't do in the TV series, but did do in the movies (which were only produced when the TV series began to dip in the ratings).

That guy I was talking to didn't really want to hear that at the con. Only thing that that diffused the situation was that I honestly enjoy Rurouni Kenshin.

That was 5yrs ago, haven't been to one since.

Done the Dragon-Con 4 times and found it to be a lovely break from reality. It really is a different world. I love the look on the faces of the "normal" folks in Atlanta when they see all of us dressed up in costume and invading thier local resturants for dinner. Never thought I would go to a Beni-Hanna in a towel and t-shirt, but that's Dragon-Con. ;-)

I go to Dragon-Con, too.. As a total Sci-Fi geek, I go for the authors and panels, but always enjoy the rest of the con, too.

Two years ago, I took my son, who was six at the time. HE LOST HIS MIND. I seriously thought he was going to pass out from excitement one time when he saw Bumblebee, Iron Man and Spider Man all walking together. I also had to pry him away from every person dressed up in any sort of Star-Wars costume he saw.

used to go to MiniCon (Minneapolis) religiously. I miss them, goofy people and all. Wish we had some decent gaming Cons in MO.

BTW, I don't mind anime at all (as long as I don't have to watch it in subtitles). But I'm a heathen, I like the stuff made for 'merica (f*&k yea). I mean, Robotech, Gundam, DBZ were all great shows and when I was little (10-ish I will admit this) I was into pokemon before it was cool.

I've been told there are a lot more females at an anime con than at others. Many of the Japanese TV series are actually targeted at young women. I know the crowd at the one I attended seemed to be about 50% female.

I was about to say, "unfortunately, they were all too young for me" (teens to early 20s), but then remembered that SWMBO turns 26 this May.
