What is the best way to go about a component shelf speaker system when my entire input method is via a 3.5mm input jack(computer, phone, ect)? I think I would prefer a seperate reciver/speaker setup for customization over an all-in-one system.

From your computer, I would highly recommend a USB to optical digital output over a 3.5 mm plug.

Something like this: Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro II USB Analog & Digital Audio Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036VO4X4/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_Ga-Dtb1X2D4W3J8B

Most receivers made in the last decade can read optical signals.

Newer receivers have USB inputs for iPhone control. Phone docks with digital outputs are pretty pricey, so your best bet may be a simple 3.5 mm plug to coaxial plugs:

I would recommend a receiver with whatever input devices you desire hooked up. This gives you much more flexibility over, for example, a home theater in a box system. You can then add whatever speakers you want from the front two, up to a full surround setup.

You have a couple of places local to you that sell nice used equipment. Stellar Stereo has a kick ass used equipment section. OHM Electronics (disclaimer, I work there) sometimes has decent stuff worth checking out, much of it towards the vintage end of things.

Good to find someone local, if you go to wegs, I work the seafood counter. As far as vintage, I have in my basement an older(late 70's, early 80's) pair of BIG Sansui(iirc) speakers, not that I plan to use those, but might they be worth much?

If they are in good shape, why not use them? They may sound great. What model are they?

Would some form of wireless receiver, wi-fi or BT, be a viable input method?
