Bet we all wish we could do things like that with our spare time & $! I know I sure would like to...
"Musashi and Yamato retain a significant place in the heart of modern Japan. That they had built the biggest, most feared warships in history remains a matter of national pride."
Tell that to the tin can sailors of Taffy 3. Three DDs and four DEs ran off the Yamato, three other battleships, eight cruisers, and 11 destroyers.
Biggest, sure. Most feared...no.
Um, excuse me, this is the real story here!
" In 2005 a Japanese movie was Until on the historical fate of the battleship Yamato. A 2010 science fiction movie depicted Yamato rebuilt as a space vessel in the movie Star Blazers."
So they made a Star Blazers movie, and tell me about it?!? I'm hurt
In reply to HappyAndy:
Yea really. All I could find was this trailer then found this firing of the wave motion gun..
I can't run down the Youtube rabbit hole tonight. I'll have to save that for tomorrow.
So the real questions are, is Paul Allen going to build a starship with a wave motion gun out of the Musashi, and do you think Simpson can make this in a SFI rated jacket?
Oh, word of caution on searching google images for Star Blazers Uniform. It starts getting weird.
He has a pretty bitchn' airplane collection also:
http://www.flyingheritage.com/default.aspx
Including one of the only (maybe only currently) flying (German engined) Me109's, and it's an E model (battle of Britain era)
The 190D can be seen in the background.
paul allen is great. He owns the seahawks. He owns this museum(or started it) http://www.flyingheritage.com/. he owns giant yachts, a porsche 959, the portland trailblazers, a laferrari, a panzer http://www.sfgate.com/nation/article/Paul-Allen-sues-over-German-tank-purchase-gone-bad-5749592.php and he drives a 19888 b2200 mazda everyday.

And he's the only one that can make that mistake also:
"There is my 190D... Oh wait, that's my 190A!"

It actually wasn't that bad (as it could have been). I have a copy of it somewhere.
Its called Space Battleship Yamato and you can rent it from amazon prime.
Or buy
Space Battleship Yamato: Movie (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HXEWECI/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_esQ9ub07ZX93S
We're off to outer space
We're leaving mother Earth
To save, the human race
Our Star Blazers
I'm kind of geeking out right now.

For us cheap bastards. It's free on youtube. Spaceship Yamato
The plan to Ten-Go to beach the Yamato was pretty off-the-wall. Had it worked it would have been unprecedented.

Well, when your choices appeared to be either to die running away from the battleships or die attacking the battleships...
Ok, so that may not have exactly been an easy choice, so there's a lot of credit due to the sailors for having the courage to attack. This was a situation where the battleships did inspire fear, but the American sailors didn't have that many options.
The Yamato and her accompanying ships were not turned away only by the tin cans of Taffy 3. There were lots of aircraft engaging them with bombs, torpedos and strafing. Planes came from Taffy 1 and Taffy 2 escort carriers in addition to the planes from Taffy 3 escort carriers.

At that point in the war, Japan was trying to conserve what naval power they had left. The escort carriers simply just convinced them through throwing everything including the kitchen sink and suicide charge destroyers at them.....yea, I probably would have thought there was more there than there actually was.
Ol' Paul is an OK dude in my book. Like Jay Leno and Malcolm Forbes, he knows how to have big fun with big money. I saw a kewl show on TV about what the nuke test sites at Bikini Atoll are like these days. The whole crew is supported out of a "research vessel".... Octopus. Heh. Helluva work boat, that. James Cameron was over the Marianas with his deep dive sumbersible, delayed again and again by weather. Finally did the dive but now has to be in London in 2 days fro whatever reason. How he gonna manage? Let's call Paul, cuz Octopus is sortakinda near by, fire up the jet ranger, pick James up ol buddy ol pal, and back to the boat and then motor along to the nearest airport. Seems like he is getting some good use out of his toy. Maybe he'll find Atlantis... A good pal of mine had one of the most interesting jobs out there-- Paul's tech assistant. And so had his own stateroom on each of his yachts. Got scuba certs cuz Paul wanted a dive buddy, just fer instance. The on the job stories he has.... um... "the 959 is in Nice and I need you to drive it to Paris." "OK!"
In reply to Jay_W:
They need to find the USS Indianapolis next.....it'd be his chance to one up National Geographic since they failed miserably.
I'm sure you have some questions about the boat he used to find it, the MV Octopus.
Like is it large?
Yes. Yes it is. Can I land a helicopter on it?
Yes you can. Can I launch other smaller boats from it?
Yes you can. Does it have a garage full of awesome inside?
Yes it does. Wait, crappy little helicopters only?
No, awesome ones. Ok, but I bet it doesn't have it's own submarine!
Yes it does. Did I mention the garage of awesomeness? It has a pretty nice boat in there as well.
But no jetskis.
Because they are in a separate compartment on the side. Along with some other RIBs.
Yeah, but without an onboard multi-track recording studio...
OK, has one of those too. But what if I want to land TWO helicopters?
A second landing pad at the bow huh?
With a cool helicopter. Wow. Does it have a fiberglass boat with a PWC motor in it?
No, it does not.
