Thread from 2016:
...is annoying.
I got it also. I think it had a lot to do with eating way to much Cajun style food tonight though... I got the burn...
If I can't sleep, I try counting the number of times I shift on the way to work, starting over each time I lose track.
It's strange. The cause seems to be alcohol. I've noticed a pattern where if I have a beer or two during the afternoon or evening, if Berks up my sleep. In the case of Sat, the last beer was at 6pm. On nights when I don't drink anything, I sleep fine.
This really sucks as I really like a good craft beer now and then.
I've tried the melatonin thing. It seems like it works for some, but not for others. I fall in the others camp. It's worth a try though.
I'm starting to get it more and more lately. I'll feel sleepy, go to bed at 11 or so, then just lay there for 4 or more hours till I finally fall asleep or I'll get pissed, get up and surf till the sun comes back up. It sucks, my mind just won't shut down at night.

Indeed, alcohol can affect your sleep. However, if the insomnia is not stress-related, or caused by some other medical malady, I long ago decided to accept a little less sleep and enjoy the adjunct benefits of an alcoholic beverage or three in the evening
I went through sleep troubles for years. Not much sucks worse than insomnia. Hypersomnia was way better.
When I got divorced in 2010 my sleep went to E36 M3. Enough I sought professional and pharmaceutical help. That did the trick and helped bring things back to an even keel. Lack of sleep due to stress creates more stress and a very unhealthy loop that can end extremely poorly.
Nowadays I find that a glass or two of bourbon of an evening is just exactly what I need to sleep soundly.

My mother has that gift. Unfortunately, it was not passed down to me. Fortunately, I am not as light a sleeper as my father. Somewhere in between.
Last night was better. Went to bed at around 11:30 with a full stomach and no drinking. Still woke up at 1:30, but went back to sleep fairly quickly.
Stress could be part of it. It's weird. My current job situation has me with more money than I've ever had in my life, but it has come at a cost. The stress level has been off the charts coming into a project that is under construction, I didn't design, and is full of design screw-ups and misses... Like a pump I just found which I'm pretty sure is powered incorrectly. Berk.

I've been in this situation many times. It is difficult to make it known that the problems are not your fault without appearing to be a douche who never takes responsibility and continually throws everyone under the bus.
My sleep problems went away when I learned to take a smaller berkeley-bag to work. See, when the berkeley-bag runs out of berkeleys, I stop giving them.
Long time sufferer. Currently, I am doing pretty well after a visit to a Neurologist. He diagnosed the root of the problem (divorce 15 years ago) and prescribed 1mg Melatonin a few hours before bed (not a handful at bedtime) and Trazadone. It's technically an anti-depressant, but also prescribed for insomnia as it has the side effect of making you drowsy. It doesn't knock you out like Ambien, but you don't walk naked to Starbucks at 3am either.
Plus, it has the added benefit of making me less depressed about my lack of Challenge participation. :(
