I am surprised a thread hasn't been started on this. I was surprised by the results. I didn't expect Santorum to tie Romney and I was also pleasantly surprised that Ron Paul got third.

I think it shows how split the Republican voters are right now. Too split. Too many voters won't get "their man" on the ballot and will go third party instead. It will be Ross Perot all over again.

Thats basically my feelings on it. They make themselves look so divided that I don't think they will have a single person that the majority of republicans will be happy with. The dems will continue to run the Whitehouse. I don't care to pay attention to the primaries anymore. Its a joke.

Agreed. Still, I'm even more convinced Romney will be President.

It all depends on Romney uniting the party. The Reps have been rather divided for the past 4 years, with a libertarian movement gaining ground. The only rallying cry they have for the whole party is simply "anti-Obama", will it be enough?

I think the split is between the party and the people. The party is way more to the center than the people who support the party. The party wants a middle of the road like Romney and the people want a conservative. Like the last election cycle the party will win and we will be left with Romney.

That said it is very rare for the guy who wins Iowa wins the nomination. I believe Ford was the last one.

Nope, Bush in 2000. Ford was never elected.

People are putting a lot of emphasis on an awfully small sample size. 29,000 votes for the winners?

This whole election feels like deja vu from 2004, when all the Democrats could muster was vehement anti-W sentiment and a guy nobody really could believe in, Kerry. The party was pulled towards Howard Dean (neé Gingrich) by their hatred of Bush, but nobody really thought Dean could win in a general election so they went with Kerry even though they didn't really like him either.

I predict an Obama - Romney general election, with Romney suffering because the republicans are accepting him only as the candidate of last resort.

agreed. While one headline says Romney was the winner in Iowa, another way to interpret the results is that 75% of voters wanted somebody OTHER than Romney. That is telling indeed.

This presumes Republicans will prefer another four years for Obama. Sentiment and rhetoric from Repubs suggest otherwise.

Nobody expects the Santorum Inquisition!

I just hope Paul can gain some more momentum, because Romney or Santorum? Might as well just save everyone the time and money and cede the presidency to Obama for 4 more years.

Even Ron Paul doesn't see himself as a viable candidate: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2012/01/03/ron_paul_asked_if_he_sees_himself_in_oval_office_not_really.html

It doesn't presume that at all - in fact it presumes the opposite. But when all your candidate has going for them is that they are "not Obama," that's not entirely likely to bring out the voters in support of them.

Remember, Kerry was "not W" back in 04, but he lost pretty big if I remember right, and Democrats were certainly energized against W at that time.

If you want to see how Romney will go down in flames, look no further than the ads branding Kerry as a flip-flopper, his ridiculous faux-pas of attempting to look down-to-earth by Hunting, windsurfing, and the like.

Ron Paul is currently 76 years old, yes? how many people won't vote for him because he's older than their grandpa, and could very well die in office?
