This is a follow up to my I got a job offer thread.
So, I accepted the offer and gave my notice. My manager was shocked, as I knew he would be. I explained to him that the only reason I left was because I needed the ability to work remotely, and HR already said that wasn't going to happen.  He asked "what if I could make that happen". I said that we would have things to talk about.

A day or two later a director (I've known him for 15 years, great relationship) we had a 2-hour lunch. He asked why I am leaving. I explained the need to work remotely. He asked of there was anything else and I told him the workload is utterly ridiculous, and he agreed. So, at the end of that lunch he said "so, what I take from this is that if we could authorize remote work, and could alleviate the workload to some extent, you'd at least consider staying". I said that yes I would consider it, if it was in writing, and if it happened soon as I only had 4 more days with the company, and once I started with the new company the chances of me leaving were pretty slim.
He called me 2 1/2 hours later, after having a meeting with HR, another director, and the interim CEO. He said the remote work was approved, and a requisition was sent to the mother ship in Germany for a new position that would be shared between me, and the other part of my department. The next morning I had all of that in writing.

TLDR; I declined the offer that was made to me by the new company and stayed with the company I have a history with. I can now work remotely and move anywhere I want.

No, I didn't ask for more money. I'm sure I could have, but I didn't want this to be construed as a way to get more money. That's not what I wanted, and I didn't want to muddy the water.

Thanks to you all for your input. I just figured I'd offer a follow up in case you've been loosing sleep wondering what happened in my life lol.

Carry on.

Nice! That shows you are valued.

I remember years ago when I worked at TWG, my buddy who was the lead software engineer put in his notice. The VP of Engineering, immediately called our manager and HR and told them to fix it.

$30k/year raise and more responsibility and he stayed.

It was hard, but I believe it's best to shoot straight. I told my company the truth and let them show their true corporate culture. No games from either side, just two parties trying to work out what's best for all involved.

My jaded self needs to see stuff like this sometimes. Not every company fuels the profit furnace with employee souls.

Wow. That's berkeleying amazing. Congrats.

I'm also happy to see that both you and the company didn't play games, mince words or skirt around. You proposed what was needed, you're obviously valuable enough to warrant those changes and they happened swiftly. Kind of shocking in todays corporate climate.

edit; To me it also shows that in the future, when you DO ask for more money that you're valuable enough to get it. Good job.
