After growing up in Chicagoland, I was never cold in Denver--- not in the seven years I lived there. Denver is really a high desert, it's very dry, and the snow is fluffy instead of wet. 40 degrees in Denver is NOTHING like 40 degrees in Chicago--- In IL the wind rips through you. In Denver all you need is a fleece in 40 degree temps, and it's almost always sunny. I loved the climate there.
Bring lots of lip balm (Blistex is the best-- Carmex is the devil), as you'll need it!
I very much enjoyed my time in Denver. If the Cherry Creek area is too pricey for you, check out Observatory park, and the Denver University area. It's nice, but not quite as expensive.

Thanks for the tips, I passed that info on to my realtor; I like the Observatory Park area too. I've been working through tons of data right now and I appreciate all of the help.
I agree with your description of Chicago completely. Even after a few New England winters I was never as cold there as just trying to walk down the street in Chicago. It seems like Denver never sees too much extreme weather in either direction but I will definitely grab some blistex.

What is you specialty? I honestly will need considerable medical expertise when I get to the area. Mostly need a great neurologist...
My doctorate is really only helpful if you are having an existential crisis or contemplating a higher power or E36 M3 like that...
Popping in to say thank you to the OP and all who responded. In addition to the St. Louis job (hiring decision expected next week) I have an interview this afternoon with a different company for an opportunity in Denver.

I'm a general/family dentist. I have a good neuro surgeon but not a neurologist...

I just got back from another weekend of making plans and figuring things out in Denver. Thanks again to everyone for all of the info and help.
We decided on a place in a new luxury high rise type building immediately adjacent to the Botanical Garden. It is something new for us and a little out of character, even, but should be a great change. We found a unique opportunity and I am looking forward to a little bit of the fancy amenities.
If anyone is looking for a decent suv in the near future I can make you a good deal on my '05 Grand Cherokee; loaded and tastefully modified. Presently I am working on a few upgrades to the '05 Legacy GT so it can be the sole family truckster moving forward. I won't get my dream garage out of the move but indoor parking is nice and there is a large furnished work room with tools, benches, equipment and storage for fixing up bikes and outdoor gear... or just drink and watch tv away from the family...
If all goes according to plan I'll be relaxing in the rooftop hot tub in time to catch the fireworks on the 4th.

Thanks guys.
It was actually my scrooge of a wife that decided to end the miserly ways and move on up a little bit. The sad part of it all is that it makes getting a car to the challenge a little bit more of an issue; the nice part is I just realized how close it is to Lincoln and solo nats...
I'll be sure to update and ask for any more input as needed.

Updating since I have been in Denver for a couple of days already. Again, many thanks to those who spoke up to help me out; much appreciated.
Current view:
I find the mountains in the distance to be quite pleasing as a general backdrop and occasionally startlingly beautiful at a glance. I took the advice to up my budget a little bit and am still surprised at how easy life gets once you cross a certain monetary threshold. My building is directly adjacent to the botanical gardens so of course we are already members since the children's area is pretty nice.
The Subie made it out already (48 hours flat!) but my furniture and stuff is a couple days out still so I'm "roughing it" with my daughter on camping cots and reheated food... we actually had Xfinity install the internet; Amazon deliver a ton of stuff ahead of us and Whole Foods delivers within 2 hours so it is just a fun time at the new place.
Thanks again. It has been a tough move so far but very memorable so it is all worth it in the end.
