Step 1: Find out what frequencies and transmission type is used locally. If it is a digital trunked system like around here you are probably SOL.
I have an app on my android that picks up local police/ems, as well as a handheld unit that does the same but I mostly use it for severe weather updates. Been wanting to get into Ham, but haven't had the time. What does she want to listen to?
Local police, fire. She always wants to know what's going on.

I listen to Broadcastify from time to time to see whats going on locally. It works fine and I like you don't need an app to listen to it
