My endless work travels are taking me there for the next 300+ days. I'll be working on the west side of town and looking for places to focus in on for living and places to avoid. I'm considering purchasing property and using it as a rental after I leave since it's a transient military town. 

I've spent considerable time in this city before, just never got out into the suburbs. 

I'm not super excited about this as I love SoCal and if I have to depart I'd rather just be going back home to Central Florida; but, gotta keep adding to the childrens college fund.

I'm a little out of date on this but I lived in SA full time from 08-10 and part time for another year and a half or so.  We were in the Bandera Rd. /  1604 area, which is pretty nice.  Generally good neiborhoods and an excellent school district.  It's convenient to UTSA and the medical center, but be aware that commute times at rush hour  can be ten or fifteen minutes to the mile. Untill you get inside 410 a bicycle will smoke a car at 8 am or five pm.

Looking for a nice, quiet, neighborhood/area to rent or buy in on the west side of town. Looking to keep my commute on the shorter side otherwise I'd probably just buy up in New Braunfels. 

Looking for areas to avoid.

To buy, you'd be stretching it to find something for under that price in the better neighborhoods on the NW side. 

Look at the Far West Side zip 78254. Just south of Helotes. Hopefully that isn't too far. Its easy to commute here to be honest. The traffic isn't like southern California (I was stationed in southern California before San Antonio).

Renting that's a decent budget for 3 bed 2 bath in that area. 

Why is your rent budget higher than your mortgage budget? 

Utilities will be $300 a month that's including wifi.
