Both would achieve the goal of hiding the currently open window, but one hides all windows and shows your wallpaper, while the other leaves any other windows open

Exactly. If I am trying to see my desktop, there is a lot more than one window in the way :)

Oddly enough, people loved cars when they were introduced because cities were cleaner as a result.
There was an amazing amount of horse poop generated in any moderate sized city. That had to be manually collected and carted around and stored somewhere before it could be shipped off to God knows where. And I am sure they were not making the roads spotlessly clean where they picked up the road apples, they just scraped up the majority of it and left the rest to dry out in the sun. Or not, if it was raining.
Remember old timey photos of buildings that had shoe scrapers/brushes in front of every door?
